Personally I do not see a RPM. I see circulation wear and die deterioration.

The MM definitely took a hit, but I don;t see an RPM. What are you seeing that makes you think it might be one? Also look at coppercoins.com to see what they look like for this date.

OK...here is your pic zoomed ad what I think you may be looking at as an S under the D.
Alleged D(S) OMM
Alleged D(S) OMM
Here is the problem:
1. Back in 1958, mint marks were hand punched onto the dies by a skilled workman.
2. The US mint in San Francisco did not make any S pennies this year, thus a die was never there to be punched with an S.
3. Since the San Francisco mint did not punch any cent dies with a MM that year, they did not have one to send to the Denver mint to have the Denver mint punch a D over the S.

It is not uncommon for coins that have been in circulation to have marks and stains added to them that remind us of familiar looking objects/symbols. This common situation is known as pareidolia.

If you still want to verify whether you have a D over S after understanding the above information, then get some (marked as) PURE acetone (walmart- 2.00 a bottle in the health and beauty section) and let your penny soak in it for a couple of minutes. The acetone cannot harm the metal of your penny, yet might remove some of the gunk in the area of the MM.

You can also use either the tip of a rose thorn or a porcupine quill with sufficiently small tip to clean out the inside of the D mint mark (and the gunk around it if the acetone does not remove it).

I know…porcupine quill? Check out eBay auctions, they are inexpensive and sold by the bag. Neither the quill nor the thorn can scratch your coin.

In the end I feel the aforementioned facts will likely hold up. :)
