Don't worry about it! Relax and have fun with it. We all started out the same way.I'm still trying to learn, there's just so much and it's a tad overwhelming.

Re: 1921 Pease $
...questioning if grading is necessary... It is never "necessary" to have a coin slabbed. Grading companies are an optional service offered to the hobby. Unfortunately these companies have earned, with some (especially newer collectors), a status of being essential. These companies are fa...

Re: Discolored Larger Penny?
A penny hammered or squished between two pieces of leather can produce what some call a "Texas Penny," being that, "all things are bigger in Texas." You may have one of these. Its considered damage - but a novelty item!

Re: Removing dirt and grime from Pennies
Agreed with the quill idea. But I use a porcupine quill as they are soft enough not to mark the coin and can be very tiny in diameter. Some even are small enough to scoop the gunk out of the center of a D mint mark. Although sometimes a small grain of gunk can get under the tip and put a small scrat...

Re: submitting to TPG.
Remember slabs are not air tight. You can protect coins just as well - if not better with Ait-Tite capsules. The capsules are also a lot less expensive.

Re: 1917 slq type 1
Might be the pics, but I think I see wear/broken luster on the thigh at least. I believe that limits it to an AU as a max grade. Admittedly I have not studied grading on SLQs though.

Re: 1998 Lincoln Cent ( Wide AM Mint Error FS-901)
Something that is a real help for pricing is just go to ebay and look for already sold items. Its an option on the left side as you scroll down the screen. It shows what people are currently paying for an item.

Re: Removing dirt and grime from Pennies
As long as you are not rubbing the surface (wearing the surface details) or removing surface metal (physically or chemically), then taking dirt off of a coin will not hurt the numismatic value.

Re: My first Mercury dime - 1923
Going through eBay's sold items will aid in telling if the price you paid was too much. Personally, for cleaned coin, I think the price paid was 10.00 or so more than I would pay. Another decent online source to get a feel for prices is, numismedia.com. The following link for Mercury Dimes shows an ...

Re: 2012 Denali quarter different colors and finish
Looking at the zoomed pictures the surface is very porous looking. It reminds me of the coins I used to put into nitric acid so my students could have a dramatic object lesson on how nitric acid dissolves metal. Its difficult to tell from pictures.

Re: 1914 P Lincoln Wheat Cent Error??
Remember Billy Kid00, if you can think of a way to do it to the coin using tools, then its likely just post mint damage. As you can see in this case, there is a contact mark from a hit, a definite gouge in the cent, near the 2nd 1 in the date. Sometimes a gouge like this can even move the metal of t...

Re: Stacked some Peace Dollars
There is a new Sasquatch coin I want. Down Under they have a "Great Aussie Coin Hunt" going on.Twenty six different $1.00 coins have been released. Each design has a letter of the alphabet on the REV and a picture of something beginning with that letter. For example there is the letter P R...

Re: 1992 Penny Error
I agree with the above assessments. Even a major off center cent where the date has been affected (missing) is often less valued than one where the date is discernable.

From what I can see in the pics, the details of the design elements look, to me, like the copy I bought from China years ago to study fakes. The mint mark also sets up a flag - Daniel's video will show you.

Re: 1936 penny !
A clash occurs when one die is damaged by being struck by the opposing die ?? Which makes an impression of the top die into the bottom and vice versa. So coins struck after the clash happens will have design element from the OBV and REV. So a mint worker, unfortunately (I like clashes), gets out th...

Re: 1992 DDR?
While still a bit fuzzy when enlarging them, I am pretty sure what I see is some strike doubling (SD) and maybe some Die Deterioration Doubling DDD. MD occurs when the dies the coin is struck with are physically loose in the press. The dies "bounce" during the strike and you end up with wh...

Re: 1943 Lincoln Wheat cent copper? 3 grams
I agree with Daniel.
Your pics were used below.
Compare the change of direction in the curves on the "spines" of the 3 to what is on your coin. The 3's spine is not a smooth curve like that of a 9.

Correct! Keeping such things makes for good learning tools. You will find as time goes on that you can fill a room with MD and/or DDD coins. They make good teaching tools. Sometimes a drastic MD coin is fun to save. Kennedy Halves can readily be found with MD and I believe its b/c the larger diamete...

Re: 1982 D Lincoln Cent small date? copper 3.05 gr
Plating/damage issue. Look how small the item that resembles a D is compared to an actual D.
