Re: 1880 P Morgan Dollar AU58 or higher?

I see some abrasions on the hair above the ear, the upper cap fold, the eyebrow, and the top of the eagle's legs. Otherwise, minimal contact marks overall and the cheek has normal chatter . Tilt it under a desklamp and see if there's unbroken cartwheel luster in all of those highspots.

Re: 1880 P Morgan Dollar AU58 or higher?

The coin would make MS and I recommend buying already graded examples to compare and buy a Coin World Making The Grade Book.

Re: 1886 50c Piece, Beautiful Toning, send for regrade?

The coin has an old cleaning then artificially toned or retoned, cleaned coins do not always have cleaning lines and such. Chemicals have been used for years to alter and brighten the surfaces of darker coins or just to make them more shiny. I would leave as is.

Re: Morgan 1878 8TF VAM 23 TOP 100

I would sink that money into a DRLS with a macro lens, you can take the best images with that. It's what I use. Lighting and focus are usually most people's issues, not so much the equipment.

Re: Morgan 1878 8TF VAM 23 TOP 100

I have not used any heavy magnification to ID VAMs, basically my nekkid eye and a 5/10 loupe. Now I could not ID the cent RPM I received from CONECA until I got a small cell phone microscope, obviously not perfect, but really helped and I could finally see what it was. Now my biggest complaint is wi...
