Looks like a "D" Mintmark to me.....

You are correct, this is clashing… But I would not call this "Heavy".

Zooming in on the pic of the REV, you can see what looks like a corresponding, but lesser, flattened area on the opposite side of the area in question. A coin on its edge being hit, for example, with a hammer shows these same characte...
