Re: 2008 Gold Buffalo bullion with weird rim
The thing that makes me wonder is that I know these have irregular fields, which I suppose are there to add depth to the design. They may also be there to imitate the appearance of the original buffalo design. Nonetheless, I was thinking that maybe the irregular fields could cause this waviness.

Re: somebody help me medal libertinas americanas
The last two could be authentic, because most French medals are extremely common, from what I've seen. Of course you're right that they've all been cleaned beyond reckoning. It looks like someone took some Brasso and a grill brush to them.

Here's another Prussian coin. This one isn't a proof, but I think the design is nice. It's a gold 20 mark of Wilhelm II.

Re: 2007p dime cracked die
If the orientations in my head are correct, this isn't a die crack at all. Well, it is, in a way, but it's more advanced than that. My guess would be that this is a shattered die. It is probably one of the last strikes that the die made before the raised area (which would be sunken on the die itself...

Education will not prevent greed........... No, but said greed will find no victims if most or all collectors know to stay away. It's now common knowledge that coins shouldn't be cleaned, but it didn't used to be. Some coins still get cleaned, but since books, periodicals and general word of mouth ...

Certain Kennedy halves are also well known for this same type of error, though the 'FG' (for Frank Gasparro) is missing on those. From what I can tell, 1982 is the most common, but many years are affected.

It could be a filled die too. Sometimes mint 'goop' (a mixture of grease, metal shavings and Lord knows what else) gets stuck in the features of a coin design. It happens most commonly on letters and numbers. In some, much rarer cases, this 'goop' can actually solidify, fall out and be struck into t...

By the way, I said earlier that the translation of the bottom obverse is ...

As for the quarter, the design is actually kind of nice, though I generally detest the idea of state park quarters. I've yet to see any in change yet, but I have only found 3 different 2009 quarters.

1913 Prussian 3 mark - Centennial of the defeat of Napoleon
This is my newest acquisition. It's a 3 mark from Prussia commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Prussian defeat of Napoleon in 1813. As far as I can tell, the obverse translates as "The king called and everyone came" and "with God, for king and the homeland". I'm not entirel...

I agree that it looks like a type I from the photograph. I can see the date! I've heard that you can do the same thing with vinegar for a less distorted appearance, but that takes considerably longer. Also, if you want to make the acid area a little less noticeable, apply the Nic-a-Date with a cotto...

Re: ANGS - Do not buy coins graded by ANGS!
The problem is that grading is subjective. If they think the coin is MS70 even though it's barely readable, that's not illegal, it's just being stupid. The only way they could actually be charged is if you proved that they had intent to defraud or if they made some sort of guarantee as to the coin's...

Half price seems a little generous. I would probably say that an acid date would sell for less than a quarter of average retail for that grade. Still, it's worth more than a dateless coin.

I've done this myself with a couple of no-date nickels. Just follow the directions on the box and it works great! As for the value, well, it can't hurt. A dateless nickel is worthless without a date, and it is essentially worthless after the date is restored. There are some noteworthy exceptions, ho...

Imagine living in 1970. 90% silver coins hadn't been minted for 6 years*, and you're trying to decide whether or not to keep some silver coins from change or from the bank.
