I have lost track the number of times someone here has told someone to research how the mint actually makes coins and what and can not happen to a coin at the Mint. What gets me in the June 21, 2021 issue of coin world is a coin (actually three pieces) of a Proof Eisenhower Dollar that was "struck on three separate copper-nickel dime planchets at the same time"1 placed so they formed a "clover leaf pattern"1. NGC graded this a Proof 68 Ultra Cameo. I think that any one who knows anything at all about the minting process would have a problem with this. Seeing as Proof coins are minted differently than circulation strikes (regular strike). I myself can not figure how three dime planchets ended up in the collar for a proof Eisenhower dollar. In my very limited knowledge I can only think that this so called error was made on purpose. I may be wrong, yet I also would have never have thought a grading company would actually grade this. Look at the so called 1959 wheat cent. Even though the Secrete Service verified that this coin was real, no grading company will certify it. To top it all of this coin/s sold at Heritage's April 22 to 25 auction for $105,000 (dollars)1.

Re: This makes me sick.
I think a lot of these dramatic striking errors were allowed to happen and allowed to leave the mint somehow. And if that's the case, and the 1933 St. Gaudens is illegal to own if it was stolen from the mint then some of these mint errors should be too.

Re: This makes me sick.
Normally I tell this to newbies. And since newbies are likely never going to find such a rare irregularity such as you mention, it would only cause more confusion to a newbie to mention that...well...in some very special and rare cases.... .I have lost track the number of times someone here has told someone to research how the mint actually makes coins and what and can not happen to a coin at the Mint.
And this is especially true for the very zealous newbies who come here "knowing" they have hit the jackpot. I can see it now...
"Well, I was told on counauctionshelp.com that in very rare cases then ________, so I just KNOW mine is one of those very rare cases."
I have seen similar type situations happen in the past 10 years of online coin forums.
