My very unique type set!
So, when my great-aunt passed around 2004, I saved this really sweet leather-bound jewelry box she had. I got to tinkering and figured out a placement for air-tite holders that would fit perfectly.
Thus:
(The dupe Lincoln in the flat compartment is a steel cent. The Jefferson is a war nickel. I don't like modern coins with presidents on them! So, one design, one metal for that type - phooey!
The seated series goes: H10 - 1837 no stars, Quarter 1840s no motto, Half 1853 arr. & rays, Dollar 1860s motto, 20-cent 1870s, dime 1880s legend on obverse.
There is only one each of the half-cent and the large cent, because of space limitations, and you get the gist of the design from each. They need to jive with the bust era anyways. The braided hair large and half cents is similar enough to the matron head.
I had space in the upper right corner of the rows for up to a half-dollar sized coin. What to do? The era is 1909 - 1947. Well, only one solution: the reverse of a Pan-Pac commemorative gives it a nice final emblematic statement. I thought about a $5-dollar Indian coin, but, only ONE gold coin? Naa!
The coins in the picture aren't all correct - yet. And I do have a seated dollar in the meantime. It's more to see how the air-tites look when they're all in place. The band above will hold a PCGS Bust Dollar (or a Trade Dollar?).
I need to bond with my coins; hold them in my hand individually. You can't do that with an album, or a glass case full of slabs.
Neat and original, huh?

And P.S. the United States has not issued a desirable design for circulation collecting after 1947! I absolutely detest the coins presently in circulation! What the blazes did they do to Jefferson? Many of the modern commems and bouillon coins have artwork that is downright ridiculous - with exceptions, of course. The portraits on the presidential dollars? Deplorable IMHO! Contradict me!

Re: My very unique type set!
VERY nice set and thanks for sharing the pics with us.
I love the looks of that Pan-Pac half! Recently I have had researching in another hobby that led me to looking for a pic of one of the Pan-Pac displays to verify some ideas for some history I am researching/writing.
I spent three (amazing) days looking at old photos of displays that were at the Pan-Pac and the buildings etc. It cost $1.4 TRILLION in today's money to build that "city!" Can you imagine? Man it was beautiful!
But back to the coin...I am now thinking I very much would like to own one of those halves - hopefully as nice as yours appears to be.

Ha! The coins in the template are all pictures of downloaded plate coins! This is my goal! I am nowhere NEAR there! But, I do have coins for everything EXCEPT the Pan-Pac. Maybe a sesquicentential as a place holder in the mean time... But it just doesn't have the same "zing"!

I didn't look closely enough at the coins in the box. I loved the layout in the box and thought instead of us trying to make us see them in situ, that you had laid them all out and taken one large pic to make them easier to see. Oh well. I really like the box and coins in the box. It makes quite the display

1st I like it, it makes for a great display case :DMatthudson wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 4:16 pm And P.S. the United States has not issued a desirable design for circulation collecting after 1947! Can't really disagree with you as you add "with exceptions" but with those exceptions added in (at least mine) I would have to made the date 1964 (I have to include the silver kennedy half) The only other modern exceptions were not minted for circulation :D

The historical reasons alone for swiftly ushering in the Kennedy half dollar make the 1964 extremely fascinating, I agree.
And it spared us from 14 long years of the Franklin design. I have to tolerate one in my birth year set, in fact. Clad coins? Good Lord, no!
The clad Ike's are suited for inserting under a table leg to keep it from wobbling, at best. (I jest, of course.) And why the SBA society hasn't sued over her deplorable effigy is a mystery to me. It's akin to that statue of Lucille Ball in Jamestown.

Re: My very unique type set!
Jamestown...close to where I am from. One of my Dad's Uncles was in Miss McGilligudy's class!
Anyway...
I agree with most modern designs being bad, but would not be a Kennedy half specialist if I disliked that design. I do like the Eagle, especially, on the REV.
As to the Ike's, sorry, I cannot agree with you on that one either. No. President Eisenhower is no Walking Liberty to look at, but the Eagle landing on the moon, to me, is a great design. Patriotism and pride at being a true American and what we really stand for, I am sure, is a part of that as well as what I consider aesthetics. Again - its sure not a Weinman eagle design, but I do like this work of Frank Gasparro's with its almost hidden re-entry spacecraft and golfer as well.
And again, maybe its also that these two presidents, despite being different political parties, were men who actually cared about America's people.
If I had to any other post '47 coins as being not so bad, I do like the Liberty Bell on the Franklin REV. I am about 80% on the '76 drummer quarter REV, and I like the 2005 buffalo nickel (REV only!). And although I actually do like how the modern Lincoln cent REV reminds me of more classical coin designs of the good old days, I did like how the Memorial cents had President Lincoln on both sides.
The rest of the stuff...I agree. I especially agree about terrible new commemorative designs where they throw actual history out the window to make politically "correct" issues be on our coins. Very sad.
There may be some quarter REVs I would like, but after "special design" turned into a common event by issuing a new quarter REV every time the mint director sneezed, I don't even look at or care to search through the state quarters, parks, territories, inventions, vegetable gardens, biggest potholes, ad nauseum "program coins" etc..

Re: My very unique type set!
Technicly I have a near completed type set including gold (is a couple double eagles holding me back lol) but to be honest the raw set are mostly lower grade. I recently decided to attempt an AU/MS type set with the only gold included being my 2 $2.5s. With the exception of 1 coin (the liberty head $2.5 is in an old anacs holder so doesn't "count" at ngc) what i've put together so far can be seen here... Ranked 244th and only 1/2 done (sorry some pics missing still but they all the moderns all the good stuff has pics already lol... admitedly a few of the coins are just placeholders (examples i had on hand already graded ie the 35s Merc dime) https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/compet ... ts/305589/

Re: My very unique type set!
Very nice! I enjoyed looking through it. Understandable about the double eagles. The price of gold what it is I don;t think those will ever be something I own either. I should have got them at 50.00 each back in the 70s.
