Residue Removal on a Coin? (Problem Coin)

#1 Unread post by OldSilverDollar »

Looking for advice on a coin I want to prepare to get graded with a few questions. I'm hoping to just get MS60 grade it's a problem coin so it's a 50/50 chance.

It's a silver coin in BU condition that has some kind of residue in several small spots on the coin, maybe left over from an old cleaning. I heard soaking the coin over night in distilled water might help get it off? or is there something else that would remove residue stuck to the coin but not effect the coin itself?

it has some strange overall light toning/coloring on the luster of the coin at angles but dipping is not an option as it looks like it already is borderline from past light cleanings so maybe I could edge tone it in an old album to try to hide it? or just leave it alone in regarding the off toning? as my main concern is just the Residue coming off.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
-OSD

Thanks for reply Sal! It's been hard getting it in a photo as the reverse spots can only be seen mostly at an angle but the bottom spot on obverse can be seen at all angles. the ones on the reverse are terrifing as how to get it off without rubbing the coin?
it's a white film on the surface of some kind on reverse eagle legs but the obverse spot might be some kind of old mint milk spot?

Thanks for the Help!

I get that.. is it worth messing with?.. it's more of a sentimental coin for me.

Thanks

How long for a few seconds or minutes? then rinse in more clean acetone then distilled water? dry with a blowdryer? glass jar and not metal one?

I've heard you can soak in distilled water then freeze both in the freezer then thaw out then freeze again? i heard this would help dislodge things sticking to coin because the metal and residue have different contraction rates forcing loose the residue? have you ever heard that?, I read it on another forum but wondering if ice when it contracts could scratch the coin also. seems extreme.

Thanks

dip it in about a minute, take it out, rinse, and use a soft cotton swab to carefully try to remove the foreign stains.

Thanks for everyone's help!
it cleaned up very bright in a distilled water bath with most residue gone. possibly too well as most toning washed off also exposing more flaws unnoticed before.

Sent it off today to PCGS and in a few weeks I'll give an update of before and after. Expecting Details Grade but hoping for a low MS Grade.
