1943 Lincoln Cent (Wheat Reverse), Type 2, Steel - S

#1 Unread post by am6517 »

Good morning,

This is my second post (not counting my introduction). Relatively new at coin collecting and consider myself a novice. Received this 1943 - S cent when I was growing up. I had a few questions I was hoping to get some assistance on:

1. Again, I am a complete novice, but the color of this penny seems strange to me compared to others I have seen online....almost like it is too blue or the shade is off...or something. Just curious if this raises the alarm for anyone with more knowledge than me.

2. For the 1943-S Lincoln Cent, I was reading that there are varities such as 1943-S 1C and 1943-S 1C Double Die Obverse. Not really sure if either of those apply to this coin, but would appreciate input or direction to a source that would help me make that determination.

3. More than welcome any other observations about this coin that were not discussed in 1 and 2.

Also, of note, I did test this coin and it can be picked up by a magnet.

IMO, (1) the blue tone is from the Zinc coating on the steel naturally toning over time. (2) Variety Vista is a great site to compare your coin to the known varieties alreasy identified:
http://www.varietyvista.com/
Scroll to the bottom and find the type of coin and click. Then click on the sublinks to the left for the type of variety you are seeking. And finally, click on the year and mintmark and go through each variety posted for comparison and research.

The coin has been repurposed so replated after mint and is damaged from that process.

Hard to tell form the pictures, but you may have a plated 1943-S. Re-plating them was done frequently to make them shiny, and after mint of course, when companies would make promotional items such as this set:

These were commonly given away for opening a bank account etc. All the coins, at least in the set I was given in the early 70s were plated.
Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):
