Early Type 1 large Cent- Still guessing on Date
At a recent coin show, I found this early type-1 large cent in a foreign bin and got it for $0.2. I am trying to identify the date on the coin, but it is very far gone. After passing it around to a few people, I am thinking 1798 is the most likely option, but am still desperately unsure and looking for both advice and confirmation. The reason I am guessing 1798 is that the remenants of the date do not appear to contain a 0, and 1798 is one of the more common 1700s dates

Sorry but I unable to see anything on the coin except a very faint silhouette. I really do not think anyone is going to be able is going to see anything else via the photos you posted.

Try a different coin. This one is too far gone to correctly Photograph .

I see "97" in the third pic. One example of a type that is intriguing, even in PR01 - "Train Wreck Effect". I LOVE it! Great historical find for 20 cents!
Might come back with a "details" grade if you submitted it to PCGS, though. LOL!
This is your image #3 over an MS65+ specimen at 25% transparency.

you may or may not be right- I think I can see what you are saying, but this guy is pretty far gone. in the first image, you can see the remnants of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th digits, and it almost seems to fit

A cheap trick fI have seen in undated buffalo nickels is to put them under a 35 mm polarized camera lens and the date can sometimes be seen.
Sorry, eBay is the only place I know of for them LOL!
