Second hand Silver???

#1 Unread post by Mlcharlestonsc »

Why has second hand Silver been poo poo’ed so much? Don’t get me wrong I like the shiny silver too but hate the extra high premiums. Second hand seems even more better than junk silver right now. Because it seems to me there is a better chance to get more gains as silver spot rises. Or am I just off base here?

Silver stackers like it.

But unfortunately in the coin hobby, this has been one of the, likely unintentional but inevitable, results of the slabbing industry. The market has been re-focused by an 3rd party source (the slabbers) into looking at the best slabs as being what so many people are driven to want.

Its a shame really b/c the hobby used o be a LOT more fun when every coin had its own value and desirability based upon its mintage and mint mark. This has largely changed to be people being more concerned if they would make a profit by slabbing.

Proof of this concept is how many people we have come here with their first question being something like, "Is this worth getting slabbed?" If the market was still focused on what the hobby is named after...coins...and not making a buck through plastic, then more of the questions would be focused on things more (actual) coin oriented that marketability inquiries.

I've flipped up (Put in a 2x2) a 1968 80% Silver Canadian Quarter that my mother's co-workers found last Christmas, it's been put up & I can't find it right now, it's my first silver though. Does this count as 2nd hand silver?

Coins are called junk silver, constitutional silver. Second hand Silver is not so shinny, beat up, stained bullion or bucket melt. (ie Silver Eagles, 1/4 oz buffalo rounds, hand poured bars)

Please forgive a former teacher. But I always think of this coin when I see "shinny" vs. "shiny" 😊😅

OMG, LOL… spelling was never my strong suit. Google spell check never works when needed.

Its one of those situations like "loose" and "lose." Both loose and lose are legitimate words, so google spell won't pick them up if in the wrong context.

But "lose" (looz) is when you accidentally misplace something (or have a loss), and loose (loos) is when you deliberately let go of something (like a prisoner being set loose).

But as I said, "shinny" and "shiny" always remind me of the coins!
