1652 Pine Tree Shilling - replacing vinyl holder

#1 Unread post by Carol1859 »

Hello...first post besides my intro post.
I purchased several good quality colonial coins between 1998 and 2000, many from Stack's.
As I mentioned in my introduction post, we moved soon after and the entire collection was lost. Gone. I was heartbroken and feeling very stupid and careless.
Well, the coins turned up last week, after 20 years, in a box of other coins. I am so, so relieved...

The coin pictured here is described in the Stack's catalog as:
"1652 Pine Tree Shilling N. 10. Nearly Very Fine. 55.1gns. Pale silver gray in color. Slightly bent, as made. This is the variety with backwards N in ENGLAND. Tree, denomination and date, and legends on both sides visible, if faint. Full bird's nest break in tree."

Here's the question/problem:
This coin and 13 others are in their original vinyl holders from the auction house. They should have been removed and put in better holders...I know, I know. I had planned to do that 20 years ago.
Right now, for an immediate fix, I was just going to order some 2x2 cardboard and mylar holders to get them out of the vinyl as quickly as possible and to see if there is any damage.
Does that sound like a good plan? Is there something other than 2x2's that I should consider?

I'd like to act fast, even though I know it's probably too late...
I've been away from coin collecting since I lost these. Any help/suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Carol

Just stick with your plan and remove them.

Thanks Daniel...my new coin holders just arrived in the mail!
I'll be cutting my coins out of the vinyl holders today, and will post any questions/concerns in new threads.

Obtaining one of these shillings would be a "grail" 🪙 for me 🙂
