Lincoln D 1971 ?

#1 Unread post by josephcolorado »

Does anyone know what this is? Is this just early damage that has had time to "grow over" with a consistent patina? Same questions with the reverse of the coin (smashed lettering above).

It looks like some sort of acidic chemical was dropped over the date corroding what was there that would say 1971. Looks like a school science project unless the big leagues of CoinHelp Community say otherwise (Daniel and Paul).

Sorry, I disagree. Note how the back of the coin corresponding to the funky area on the front is also messed up by having everything flattened? This pics seem to show this coin took some sort of a hit on the front. The corresponding area on the REV was flattened simultaneously.

I think I could duplicate this with a small oak board scrap (dowel-sized but not necessarily round), a hammer, and an anvil to lay the penny on.

Although these images are very nice, I don't believe it is possible to accurately determine/describe the anomaly on the obverse of the coin... With the image posted here

The weakness in the letters on the upper portion on the reverse, are most likely due to the device depth on the adjacent side (strike pressure).

That would make sense. The strike on the obverse of the shoulder looks pretty deep, and the top of the obverse looks a bit weak. Maybe the strike was just uneven. Could the surface of the planchet have peeled away, removing most of the date? Whatever it is. It's been a while. I like the uniformity of the color. Either way, it's an interesting coin to look at. I'll save it in the "oddities" box I have. Thanks for everyone's replies. I appreciate your time in taking a look and giving your opinion.
