1880-S Morgan Dollar Strange Toning Question

#1 Unread post by WyoCoinMan »

Hello Coin Help U community! I have a question concerning my coin that maybe you guys could help me resolve. I purchased this Morgan dollar from a reputable coin dealer in a town about 120 miles from my residence. I purchased it because of the strange toning on this coin. It seems the entire coin is a uniform, dark toning while the area directly around all raised detail is silver in color and looks like the natural color of the coin. The coin is genuine as it was verified on a Sigma Metalytics and all dimensions check out. There is minimal wear but the toning is just throwing me off. Artificial, Natural? Let's see what you all have to say! Sorry for the poor photos, they were the best I could pull off with my extremely limited equipment of a webcam.

My first question: Why didn't that reputable coin dealer explain the coin to you? It does not look natural to me. It looks cleaned or some type of environmental damage. It's a bad looking coin IMO. Zero eye appeal for my taste. But it is apparently silver! 👍🏻

I agree, not a fan of the eye appeal but looked so strange to me I had to buy it. I trusted it was not a counterfeit after he showed it to me on the Metalytics, but he had nothing to say about the toning. Just a dirty morgan, I guess. Thanks for your input!!

Hey Wyo, how much did you pay, and can you return it. The kind of toning that adds value is a more pleasant rainbow color, that looks like it was exposed to something environmental that really messed with the surface. If you want, there is this guy I know that has raw Morgans from time to time, I've heard he is a pretty good guy, in spite of being an Ohio State fan, but nobody's perfect, here is a link.https://portsmouthcoinshop.com/product- ... an-dollar/

I have seen '88 AU 55 NGC coins go for around 40 bucks, so there is that.

I paid $38 bucks because it had the toning, so maybe I did OK. The pictures are not great, but the detail is great on the actual coin so it could maybe pull an MS 60. Either way, I think I will keep it because it is just interesting to me. Thank you so much for the input!!!!

That's what we like about coin collecting. There are so many different aspects to the hobby. We all have different interests which makes it interesting.

P.S. There are guys out there that only collect coins with holes in them.

This is most likely environmental damage. It reminds me of, but I am not sure, something a metal detectorist might dig up in a soil not all that friendly to silver.

Looks like it could have been silvered at one time or was a belt buckle or both.
