2021 Littleton Advent Calendar

#1 Unread post by mreslink »

My wife bought me the Littleton Advent calendar. I think she spent $60 for it. I guess we will see the true value of it when we get to the end. I’ll post pics of what I get everyday in this post. I’m guessing we will probably be right around $25 in value at the end.

You are likely correct.

The thought is what counts😊

Daniels' grab bags would be a nice alternative for next year.

One of Daniels grab bags would be awesome. Maybe I’ll save the calendar and have her do that because it holds a 2x2.

As a kid I was one of those receiving and paying for their almost worthless foreign coins...but not for long. Thankfully I had a coin dealer as a science teacher who told me what I was paying Littleton would net me a decent pile of foreign coins from his junk bin instead of just one or two coins.

I am enjoying this running total 👍

But one thing to remember...at a coin show you likely can pick up anything you have received so far for about a quarter in a "junk box" of foreign coins at different dealers' tables.

Granted I have not been t a show in about 10 years, but the last one I looked through (for oddball coins for my students), the sign was .25 each or 5 for a 1.00!

Someone who likes the variety of world coins can get an awful lot of coins for very little money.

As a kid I used to raid the local coin show junk box (typically 10-15 for 1.00 back then!), and use the "right sized" ones to plug holes in my Whitman folders.

Oh really, 10 years ago? my current LCS still has the price tag of 5 for $1 and people are literally fighting over it, usually the whole bin is gone in the middle of the week.

I’m not a foreign coin collector or fan but my 12 soon to be 13 year old daughter is. She will be getting all the foreign. I’m getting my foreign prices from NCG world coin prices. If this trend continues I’ll be up to $13 in value for a $60 Littleton rip off.

Another way of looking at it though is that I am sure it is fun wondering what is next. It can be a good teaching tool for your daughter as well. If she learns a lesson about real world marketing, then that is another plus. You will have helped prepare her for the many things like this in life.

Unfortunatley when companies are large, people automatically just trust them. The reality is the grading companies are somewhat the same - just not as easily found out. Read the PDF in my signature. People have been taken for literally thousands of dollars on variety coins that were mislabeled. The grading companies have a terrible track record (VERY costly to collectors) on getting at least the No FG Kennedy variety right.

I suspect now, having that study behind me, that the companies, since they charge a fee for a variety, sometimes just go ahead and attribute it on the label whether or not the coin is legitimately that variety or not. Check out the pictures included - all the data is from their own website and linked to.

Its looking like you'll barely hit $10 worth of coins out of $60. They're worse than they used to be from this metric. I bought a few coins from them ages ago and they've barely broken even and above in value just in recent years. Probably, the best purchase I ever had was from Littleton was a magazine ad for Silver eagles they sold them to me at $9.00 I think this was 2006 and they jumped immediately after in value to $13.00 (I should have bought more than one) ! However, I would stay away from them as their mark up is worse than most coin dealers. You're better off going with a dealer that offers at or below the listings of red book and PCGS/NGC price guides. I don't mean to shill Daniel's grab bag as another user has already has. I bought the $200 dollar one recently and just in Silver value alone was worth the purchase then I got another $30 dollars worth of junk metal coins that still have decent value (well some of them :)). So I would say his grab bags are worth it. If you watch the YouTube reviews they are spot on and sometimes the coins are overvalued but in many cases they are undervalued in relation to today's market.

I can say first-hand this is an accurate opinion on Littleton. Not only does Daniel's content back this up, but I have found out that my grandfather was a Littleton patron at least at some point in the 1990s or early 2000s. The stuff he bought just... isn't good? They sent random coins they upcharged for massively, presumably on the grounds they are old. I couldn't find any reason they would be special-different otherwise.

I got (comparatively speaking) exceptionally, extremely, beyond lightning bolt lucky with a 1961-P Proof Jefferson nickel he was given. Not only is this nickel Full-Steps, it also has supporting evidence of a (albeit super minor) doubled die on the reverse. While the DDR is not listed on PCGS, the coin itself is still worth $400 if it gets MS62 or higher. That being said, I agree everyone should avoid Littleton. Just buy from a reputable coin dealer; you support a small local business in the process.

This was just a little gift from my wife. I personally would never buy anything from Littleton and very surprised my wife did as she is a coin collector as well. I’m just posting on here because I thought people might find it interesting to follow the journey through junk of Littleton. I do support my local coin dealer, so much to the point he got my daughter a Christmas gift.

That's good to hear! I need to find a local coin dealer at some point, I guess, even if I'm not really planning on being into numismatics as a hobby after I finish parsing through and cashing out my grandparents' coins (minus any old stuff I find like silver dollars and such, of course; I'd never cash those out unless I had to).

Good Thread exposing how Littleton and other online/mail order dealer can be a total ripoff though.

I think you'll hit $10. Surely they've got something pretty significant for the 24th?!
