Post your “hobo” coins here!

#1 Unread post by JTCC »

Recently I had a idea to make a hobo nickel, and after a few hours of carving, hammering, and polishing, it actually turned out ok for the first one I ever made. I found what people had turned coins into interesting, so if you had any coins that had been modified, post them here! We’d love to take a look and have some fun!

No, not really. I know some folks have make some great looking pieces of art out of these things though. 👍🏻

I don't know if you'd call this a HOBO coin. I think someone tried to turn a silver coin into a silver coin with gold design. As you can see something happened on the front. They failed; I think, don't you?
Anyway, can't tell what year but I can see it is silver and the metal poured on it is a goldish color. Yes, I am using my Note 10 to take picture. Is this weird or what? They started pretty good on the back. The torch they were turning gold.

Hobo coins is coins that had designs carved onto them post mint, usually as a art piece.

A little more background:

The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas-reliefs. The US nickel coin was favored because of its size, thickness and relative softness. However, the term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations.

Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name.

Yes, that is what I found out, after I realized, I again missed something. I did a search and took some looking but found. Wow some you can't even tell what they started out as.
Thanks 😂 for the patience

@TripleC

Wasn't that a deliberately made issue? Seems to me I remember a few years ago they were talking about putting President Reagan on the dime and some of these were made/sold by some third party?

Admitting I wish they had done it. The FDR set, unfortunately, is boring to me. It replaced such an amazing design.

It also is ironic to me that President Roosevelt, the president who put into action legislation (the modern social security farce/burden on us taxpayers, and taking away the gold standard) ensuring our money would be ever-devaluating appears on the front!

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I was just having fun with the thread as initially stated on the OP. However, I am glad you asked and brought up the topic that there was a consideration of changing the dime for those who did not know.
I also agree with you in hopes they would have put President Reagan on the dime. 👍💯

I agree! I would love to see Regan on something. Is a dime enough? I know we all love Kennedy, but don't get mad.... I think he has had the 1/2 dollar long enough. He was put on right after his death which I commend. He probably would have been an excellent president. That being said Regan WAS an Excellent President I think he should be on the half dollar. I love how he stood up for the American People. Just my opinion! :)

I agree with all you said. I am a Kennedy half specialist and have to admit, I am ready to see the series end so I can "close off" the collection. I have way too many b/c after getting all circulated, I went for all proofs, then all silver proofs (still need a few common ones - just lazy), then all varieties (major), then all special issues, then I even added all of the Daniel Carr pieces. I think its as "complete" as a complete Kennedy set can be.

I like that Eisenhower had his dollar (another great president for the people). Kennedy was also a man for the people, and was great for the short time he was in - and this is likely why he was not in office long. But a Ronald reagan half would be great - they tried to take him out also!). Just make sure the person who did the dollar coin with his image is NOT the person to make the half.

Wow! you do collect don't you. It is kind of fun. If you know what you're looking for that is.

My dad started a State Quarter book for each of the grandkids. When I got his collection, I did take note of that and started keeping every quarter I got from change. Several months ago, when I started putting the books together, I thought I had every quarter. 😂 to be truthful it wasn't until I found one with a W mint mark (don't laugh, I had to look it up, I thought for sure it was a mistake). That I not only discovered West Point was minting coins 😂 but that the State Quarters ended and America the Beautiful began. Needless to say, I didn't have all the State Quarters I thought I had. I was mixing the two together. I was just matching the State and Mint Mark.

That is what started me on this journey trying to complete the books for the grandkids. Bought books and supplies and started organizing or trying to at least. You or Paul saved me when I was advised to take one domination at a time then separate by year etc. Still working on it.

I have taken to much a liking to the coins with the W mint mark and the Silver Proof Sets. I have been chasing them big time. I just emptied a cart I have been filling for a couple of days of all the Silver Proof sets from 1999-2009 that I could find. I wanted one of each year. Then I was planning on starting 2010-2019. Yes, that was crazy I know. I stopped myself but then I found myself putting in the uncirculated US Mint Sets. SMH

Back to President Reagan and the half dollar, I agree. I would not want on the half dollar what is on the dollar coin. I don't really like the coins very much. I think they could have come up with a better coin that looked more Presidential. 😂

Anyway, I did it again talked to much. Thank you for sharing the information you do. Even though I don't retain everything doesn't mean I don't pay attention. 😂

I had a beautiful hobo nickel with a reverse showing a hand of poker with 4 aces. Kept it in my pocket (in a plastic case) to use as a cover chip when I played poker at the casino. Fell out of my pocket at a greasy spoon breakfast place and disappeared.

Just recently saw a "Poopy Trade Dollar" where people modified the obverse to look like Liberty on the john. Had no idea that this was a thing.. there are a bunch of them out there. wish I had that much free time. :)
