Illegal? I guess every 1964 coin I find is Illegal. Darn I guess I will have to turn the rolls (searching) I found will need to be sent in to be destroyed. Either that or the Secret Service will be paying me a visit.

Re: United States Special Mint Set any thoughts?
the set you had here is a ordinary 1964 MINT SET, the rare and sought-after one is the 1964 SPECIAL MINT SET, this set is common and certainly legal to own.

Thankfully, for now until the (illegal) Brandon administration gets their way, we live in a free country where any US coin is legal to own. Unlike other countries, this means even counterfeit coins are legal to OWN, but trying to use them is illegal.

Re: United States Special Mint Set any thoughts?
the SMS was better struck than the MS, and the rareity. you can go to any coin shop and walk out with like ten 1964 mint sets easily, but there's only a few known examples of the 1964 SMS.

Re: United States Special Mint Set any thoughts?
Besides a Satin finish on the SMS coins, according to CoinWorld:
All of the SMS 1964 Kennedy half dollars are known to have been struck from a single pair of dies. Heritage identifies several die markers including “on the obverse, a tiny apostrophe-shaped lump of extra metal protruding from the bottom edge of the crosslet of the 4 in the date; on the reverse, a discernible die polishing line connecting the bottom tip of the lower crossbar of the (O)F to the A(MERICA), and another connecting the same crossbar of the (HAL)F to the rim near the D(OLLAR).”

These are not satin finish, these are mint set, business strike coins, SMS coins were only found in a deceased mint employees home in 1991. 1964 SMS sets where not issued in mint cello or the collectors.

Re: United States Special Mint Set any thoughts?
You could check varietyvista.com and use the info there to see if your Kennedy halves are doubled dies or RPMs.
Here is a way to find immediate answers when find something you suspect is a doubled die or RPM:
Immediate answers -varietvista.com:
Please click the following link:
Immediate Answers - How to find your Doubled Die or RPM online
Note:
If you do not find your coin using this easy method, then you most likely have a damaged coin or other issues like (non collectable) machine doubling, die deterioration doubling, etc. (look these up at error-ref.com)
