Barber Dime I bought for 35 Bucks online- How Did I do

#1 Unread post by monsterbug1 »

I recently found this barber dime online and made a post about it. I now have the coin in hand, and would like to make a follow-up. I paid around 35 for this coin; how did I do?

Like Earle42 says, you wouldn't harm it.
Personally, I would. I am currently soaking a coin with PVC and similar dark spots as yours in acetone and is improving each hour.

DO it in a covered container so the acetone will not completely dissolve off of the surface before you want it removed.

Sometimes the gunk and the acetone can combine into some other chemical that, if left alone so it dries on the surface, can be impossible to remove. As long as its submersed in acetone you will be safe. BTW, I used a baby food jar and lid.

Hey M, nice coin. Try acetone, if that doesn't do it, try lacquer thinner, be careful with the lacquer thinner, toxic and flammable. If these solvents don't do it, then that stuff is not organic in nature. Now for the worse news, it looks like PCV corrosion, the PVC itself can be stripped with lacquer thinner, but what it will uncover is the dreaded corrosion, the copper in the silver alloy reacts with the PVC and causes that black nastyness. ezest and other acid based cleaners strip the metal off of the surface, it can leave the coin dull, but if it is as I surmise, PVC corrosion, its about the only way to get it off.

acetone didn't do too much, but still a nice coin; appears to be no damage under the dark spots
