A 2006 Lincoln Cent question

#1 Unread post by richard560729 »

I've been encouraged by this group.

I've been looking for unusual markings on coins, specifically Lincoln cents. This specimen seemed remarkably nice for a circulated coin. Very few blemishes or nodules. Then I thought, yuck, tarnish. But a closer look, and no, it seems the zinc may be peeking through? If so, it is near the left of the monument at the reverse.

So,, I ask those who are wise and knowledgeable a few questions here..

At what point do you say to yourself, this is a nice looking penny,, maybe I should let someone else look at it? And how frequent or infrequent does a defect of thinly clad exposure occur? Is it " rare" or is it often noted?

This also gives me a chance to see if my photography of a coin is satisfactory, or would you give a critique of my nascent skills?

These are all taken with my android s10+, incandescent light.

Thank you.

Your full coin images look fantastic…
Keep in mind, that when you are doing close-up imaging,
you will need to reduce your lighting… So as not to overexposed images

It's fairly common to see the zinc core on the plated Lincoln Cents

Thank you for reviewing, for your lighting advice, and for advice on the rarity (or lack) of zinc exposure through the copper covering.

I do not know if you have seen the following I try to post for people starting to look at coins. Knowing what actual collectable errors are before trying to find them can be frustrating!

Save Yourself time, effort, and disappointment...don’t learn the coin hobby backwards. 😊

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage.

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.😊

As a roll hunter myself, I found it surprising that it's still rather common to spot MS/BU slight cents in today's rolls, probably thanks to the piggy banks. and to the subject of it be rare,---- no, I find these rather frequently. still a cool coin to find though, especially in nice shape! keep on hunting!
