Hi, I'm new member Matt Hudson. I started collecting when I noticed at the age of 7 that some of the pennies (about HALF!) had stalks of wheat on the back!
I just bought a "box of coins found in an attic"! Nothing about the condition of the cardboard 2 X 2s or the condition of the coins contradicted the premise that these had indeed be tucked away for over 50 years. Mostly silver coins, the 60s picked from circulation at the time were strong AU/UNC. Very dusty and grungy holders, some PVC, but a quick bath in acetone worked magic!
Among the lot was an inconspicuous seated dime with the surprise O mint mark, which the handwritten date had overlooked! The obverse overall pleasant with a hit in the right field; yet the reverse: "Ay Caramba!" -
Not incredibly intrusive to the naked eye a vertical gouge from 11:00 down about a third of the coin. Closer inspection shows that there is also a ridge of displaced metal, including the bottom tip of the "N" in "ONE".
I'm thinking the force to displace metal in this way would have to be incredibly strong. Was there a stray wire in the minting process?

C'est la vie! Now I'm not so sure it wasn't just stuck in as bait to stimulate the sale of the other junk silver (of which many pieces were very attractive AU coins). The picture wasn't very sharp, and I was praying the coin would arrive without arrows, as they weren't annotated on the 2 x 2.
Oh, well, I paid spot - so, it's a free coin! And to the naked eye, far from the mile-wide gorge the 10x pic shows. (This is the actual size when viewed on a 1080 full screen.) And it's actually an original with plenty of life in the devices against a "cameo" background of grime and toning! Ah, the little things! If I get 10 bucks for it one day, I'll die even happier.

Nice find. Always fun to find something this old w or w/out a mint marl.

"Strong" is a relative term. Modern clad coins would be a lot harder to mark up, but silver is fairly soft metal.I'm thinking the force to displace metal in this way would have to be incredibly strong.
Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):

One look at all the love tokens created out of these Seated coins should lay to rest any argument that it's "hard" to do. Trust me, it's easy and it easy to do to any coin.
