Cherry-picking Uncirculated sets

#1 Unread post by hastic1 »

Coins that are in the US mint uncirculated sets, are they considered normal strike coins like what you find in general service? I understand about cherry-picking proof coins after watching several of Daniel's postings but was not sure if coins in the uncirculated sets were special strikes also. Thanks for any clarification.

Yes, the coins found in Mint sets are the same coins as those made for circulation each year, but in brilliant uncirculated condition. However, there are some years mint sets were made with a special satin/burnished finish. For example; 1964-1967; 2005-2010; and 2017, which had an enhanced uncirculated finish. There may be other years I overlooked too.
Hope that helps clarify some things.

Forgot to mention that the 1964 Special strike set is very scarce and is believed only around 20 of those sets exist.

You're not going to find a 1964 SMS set, they were minted in 64 to 65 and no one even knew they existed until 1991 and they were found in a deceased mint directors home. Since 1991 no one has found anymore.

All mint sets prior to 2005 are normal business strike coins and you can cherry pick but most have already been checked so the earlier back you go the less potential there is.
