Shipwreck Effect graded coins

#1 Unread post by digispin »

What is your opinion of NGC encapsulated and graded silver coins that were recovered from a shipwreck, yet are not attributed at Details - Environmental Damage? I only learned today that this type of grading exists. This is a simple guide describing the subgrades: http://www.shipwreckstore.com/cart/page ... fined.html

Of course I think this just marking baloney. Are people paying a premium from such coins. I hope not.

What say you?

I’ve never bought one, but depending on the coin and the shipwreck it was recovered from I might.
I don’t understand the issue?
They have classifications to condition.
Some coins from certain wrecks that are certified certainly see a premium paid.

But it doesn't have a grade, this is like labeling a coin as cleaned, holed or filed, at least they give a AU or VF details to US coins, this coin they didn't even do that.

It kinda does. The label says it’s just a “Shipwreck Effect”
And there’s a description for that. I’d post it but not sure on copyright stuff. It’s just the basic coin with damage.
There’s A, B,C and then last is just “effect”.
The way I read it (at least the coin that pictured), is it’s authentic but lowest condition with no other grade assigned (UNC, AU, F, etc...)
But I do understand what you’re saying.

Welcome,
I'm not sure what "attribution" you are looking for.....?
I purchased one of these several years ago......."certified only for authenticity"
