1856 Indian California Gold Token!

#1 Unread post by AverageStacker »

I won a lot of coins in an online estate auction this week. Just got home with them and found this among them, which was NOT listed in the lot. Looking for help in identifying an approximate value of anyone has experience with them. There are 4 different "mintings" from what I have read. This appears to be #3 with the dropped "6" in the date and the very pronounced leaves on the reverse.

It is better that you send it off for authentication.

Notice that there is no "DENOMINATION" on the coin...............

& the envelope even states that it's not a coin

Just a thought. Pics are not all telling. It appears some of the berries on the REV have the gold "worn off." This could be a sign of gold plating. Copies of these were made for jewelry. I am not saying yours is a copy.

But you could also look up online what the weight of these is supposed to be and what yours weighs.

Also do a magnet test!

After a bunch of googling, I found someone that has put in an extensive amount of work into these types of tokens. It appears that mine is not genuine and was a reproduction piece created in the early 1900's. It does contain some gold as he made them as 8kt, 10kt, and 12kt. Still a pretty cool piece.

Still interesting to find a copy that is far more period than most of the ones we come across today
