Considering Buying a Bust Dollar for My Collection
Good morning everyone. I would like to purchase a bust dollar for my collection and there is a local dealer/collector that is selling this coin online. I know it is one of the most faked coins, and I have asked for the weight of the coin, but from the pictures do you think this looks real, or do you think there is something that gives you pause on the coin? If you do think it is real, what do you think is a fair value on the coin given its condition and the damage to the rim.
Thank you for your time, I am a new member and I look forward to posting more.

Re: Considering Buying a Bust Dollar for My Collection
Start here:
Look here to help ID a Chinese fake. Go through the online system using the pics.
Thorough Online Identification Bust Dollars
If it passes these tests, you should still buy it with a stated option of being able to return it. But unless the chinese have been improving their work, the fake likely will not pass the above. I deliberately bought a fake silver one years ago from the place making them in China. It is good, but it could not pass the website.
If you want added security, weigh it, do a magnet test, check the thickness. A dealer sometimes also wil have a machine to tell you if the correct metal is used. I personally make graphic overlays from legit coins and use them to find fakes.

Thank you for your comment Earle. I will make sure to analyze the coin compared to the coins in the url link you sent.

Nice one Earle I too have a fake.. some day I'll own a real one...
Re: Considering Buying a Bust Dollar for My Collection
The weight of the coin is 26.78. I think that seems about right given the condition and the small damage to the coin at the bottom.

I would purchase a graded and authenticated coin not a raw coin. The coin you posted might be alright but why take chances if you're not sure yourself?

Re: Considering Buying a Bust Dollar for My Collection
Daniel, I tend to agree with you, I almost never take risks in buying ungraded coins, especially high value coins, but I may take a chance on this coin if I can get it for a good price. I will then send it into PCGS to authenticate the coin.
Earle, the coin did make it through the website specs you sent me, that being said, I may still decide not to purchase the coin. I still want to do some additional due diligence.

Re: Considering Buying a Bust Dollar for My Collection
I have seen these things on ebay... for now, many are bad enough that even a novice collector who knows how to compare between the PCGS website and the ebay photos can ID a fake, but they are getting better as time goes onMrweaseluv wrote: ↑Sun Jul 11, 2021 11:59 pm Nice one Earle I too have a fake.. some day I'll own a real one...

Another way they are duping people is they may post a photo of a real coin and then sending a fake coin.

Re: Considering Buying a Bust Dollar for My Collection
One good point about eBay is that in such a case the buyer most likely will get back their money. I have bought other items on eBay that were not as pictured and been fully refunded without having to pay shipping to return the item. Pictures must be included though. So I take a pic of what I got and put it side by side with their pics. I nicely tell them I assume they made an error, but if the situation cannot be solved without me having to spend any more money, I will open a case against them with eBay. Even one who was giving me problems with a broken tool immediately refunded my money when I opened an eBay case against them.
I think a lot of sellers overseas tend to expect people will just let the issue drop.
Another said my package was delivered. I told them I sit where I can always see mail being delivered and it was NOT delivered. I looked up the name of the "postal service" they used and it was a sham website. When I mentioned this and threatened an eBay case, I got my item sent... and this time it came.
