1909 VDB Matte Proof (Advice, Verify Die Marks)

#1 Unread post by Shadow Price »

  • Hello Everyone! Thank you for your time.
  • I have a 1909 VDB (no MM, I belive it is a "Matte Proof") I have researched the coin with diligence, that said I am relatively new to collecting. I respectfully and with no small amount if humility request any advice or insight on how to move forward with the process of selling my coin. (Which Grading Company / Insuring the Shipping / Safeguarding against damage, theft, loss..e.t.c. / Ebay or Auction / Is it even worth Selling / Verification of Die Marks to positively Identify the Coin / Grade Estimates by you Most Esteemed Veterans of Coinage...and any other wisdom you may wish to impart) I also believe there may be doubling on "Liberty" & " In God We Trust" and if so, what bearing that has on the rarity or value of the coin, clarification on what a "Discovery Coin" means in practical terms (this is due to the fact I cannot find mention of a Matte Proof coin of this year that mentions having doubling on the obverse).
  • As a neophyte to coins I will defer to the judgement of you good people of the forum in all likelihood. Again thank you for your time!

Sorry, not to be rude. All I see is a Normal Cent with scratches not die markers . Here's mine for comparison of normalcy .

Definitely damage being shown. I am familiar with the half moon mark on the REV, but yours appears to be (like we all have at times with our coins) a bit of hope mixed with pareidolia concerning a small pit made during circulation. Compare with a known and verified cent:
1909 VDB Prof cent die marker REV
1909 VDB Prof cent die marker REV
Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):

Thank you everyone who responded. After reviewing the comments and doing a bit more research I agree that it is not the Matte Proof coin. I'm not one to cry in my glass of denial when faced with unfortunate truth, the coin will be reallocated to the appropriate location, its excel data cell updated and that is, as they say...is that.

I'm trying my very best to be as impartial and objective as possible with my coins. That said, I inherited such a vast collection that frankly I'm overwhelmed...i haven't even bothered with the world coins yet. I have learned more about coins in the past 3 months than I thought possible, while it is quite fascinating it is also a LOT of information. I am currently studying the minting process as to be better able to distinguish between damage/die marks/doubling/machine doubling...etc
