2020 d llincoln penny

#1 Unread post by shoell1 »

Going through coins and I found this 2020. It looks like a punch through and has the lettering stamped over the mark. I am not sure if this is something that I should have looked at? Or any idea if it has value? I want to hang onto things that have value to pass onto my kids.

Are you sure this is not some type of clear foreign substance on the surface?

Try a a couple of minutes soaking it in pure acetone. Acetone cannot harm the coin, and if it is a foreign substance, it likely will take it off (and in a lot less time that a couple of minutes typically).

Otherwise it could be a plating bubble issue (no value). If the bump ramains after the acetone, see if a toothpick will push it down. If so its a gas/plating bubble issue.

It is indentation. I fist thought post mint as well, but the markings are just weird. it has a few single lines that are straight in the mark. Maybe it is post damage but I thought it to be interesting.

So did you try the acetone and/or pushing it down with a toothpick?

Could be some odd strike threw but with this have a thin copper plating it’s hard to believe the plating isn’t split. Coins like this need to be examined in hand, images will not do.

I just am not really sure who to send it to. I just started this hobby this year and mostly google things. Just found this forum through watching the youtube channel.

I can look at it for you but, I'm sticking by my assessment of a foreign substance on the surface

Wexler told me to put acetone on a coin I had sent him, he was right. It was a glue of some sort. I'm not suggesting this coin has glue on it but maybe a toothpick with a tiny drop of acetone on an end of the anomaly to find out for sure.

Yeah I would love to have somebody look at it and let me know if it is post or struck through.

If you have not tried the acetone yet, it may be a real quick way to find out if you need to send it to Paul as the substance may disappear. Acetone cannot hurt your coin in any way b/c it will not chemically react with metal.

But sending it to Paul is a good idea for sure.
