1913 T1 Buffalo Nickel- S mint mark or am I seeing things???
I recently found this 1913 T1 buffalo in a bulk bin. After further examination, it appears it may have a S mint mark, but it is VERY faint, and I would like to confirm as to whether this is a "S" mint mark, or whether I am seeing things

Form the pics I believe its a bit of hope and pareidolia. We have all had this at some time when we look at our coins

Keep in mind....
If you need to use such extreme high power magnification to identify devices on coins,......... then I would say that, you're most likely not going to be able to sell/convince other numismatists.

Will apply NIc-a-Date and add pictures- will be interesting to see whether I am a victim of pareidolia or not

Images of before and after nic-a-dating are attached
Look especially under the C in Cents
I believe that this coin is/was a 1913 S T1, but it is so far gone that it is impossible to confirm it to be that coin

I can see what you are looking at the pics. I also looked at pics of the many PCGS examples they have posted of this coin and noted several mint mark locations on the coin. The pictures S-ish looking mark in the picture (remembering pictures and magnification do not compare to being in hand and can produce artifacts) appears as if it could be positioned in the general area for an S.
I traced what I see in the pic and have it below: Is it an S? In hand if I saw what I do here, I might use it as a filler (with a question mark added) in an album until I updated to one that was a sure thing.

Either way, I can't really sell it as a 1913 S T1, as the S is far too questionable( Nic-a- date did not help it at all)

here are some more images of the Nic-a-dated reverse under high magnification and at an angle(as to show raised elements)

Re: 1913 T1 Buffalo Nickel- S mint mark or am I seeing things???
Yes, that angle shows the artifact better. After looking at a lot of the S mint marks at the PCGS website, this remnant does appear to be in a legit place for it as well as a legit size. I stand by what I said before about using it as a filler with a question mark if it was mine. No way to prove or disprove it. Pretty interesting coincidence if it is not an S, but also not impossible to be a die chip worn away.
In 1936 Canada made an extremely rare cent with a dot under the date. On another forum I remember someone posting a 1936 cent with a small die chip, but not round like a dot, in just about the correct place to be the rare coin. But again, it was obvious it was not an actual dot.
Too bad your nickel cannot talk! :)
