eBay LOTS, 1854 large cent

#1 Unread post by Matthudson »

I won 3 auctions from this one guy on eBay.

A 4-coin lot,
a 3-coin lot,
and a single coin. (1847 EF - nice!)

The poster's pics were 500 x 375 pixels. (Maybe he took them in the 1970s?)

When they arrived, 5 of them were utter disasters!

Like this one:

When I contacted him about keeping some of them, and returning the others for a very fair discounted price - The average price per coin was some $13.00 among the first two lots (7 coins), and I offered to keep two of them, if he would refund $7 per damaged coin. Meaning I offered to keep two of the coins for $56!!!, if he would refund me $35. Come, on!!! That's pretty fair and more patient than a lot of people I know!!! I was very pleased with the single coin from the third auction, and had every intention of keeping it.

Got a snarky answer explaining that lots are not for cherry picking and you have to take the coins as they come. Further more, he went to great pains to post "nice pictures" of the coins, and the buyer should be able to tell what he's getting! Then he finished off asking me a small favor: Never bid on my coins again!

I'M DONE!!! ALL THREE auctons returned with a "Not as described" reason. That means he gets to pay for THREE shipping labels, because I will be DOGGONED, if I show the courtesy of sending them in one package! Even the nice 1847 he made $40.00 off of. BACK, BACK, BACK!!!

Why burn bridges, when you can blow 'em up?

He's not exactly a good salesman, huh?!

You betcha! I got that filter on "Seller accepts returns" always! Point being, you DON'T have to stand for garbage or being bullied by morons! And again, too many "not as described" ratings hurt the seller. Good!

Jack-alec gets to pay $10.50 in return postage in addition to the money he spent to ship the coins to me in the first place, only to find himself back at square one to reset the trap for someone else.

As we've already established, there is a REASON people don't post high res pics. And in 2021, it isn't because they CAN'T!

Seems to be a common tactic: group 3 nice coins and one dog together in a lot, hoping the buyer won't bother to complain. This guy got it backwards. I could probably get $7 per damaged coin - they're VF-XFs, but I don't want to build the reputation of being "the guy with the junk coins", because I'm constantly offering culls! Too easy to just buy two nice coins for $56.00, than indulge this scheming work around.

What's sad is that someone would think that was an error coin.

In a way it is! I bought it - which was an error!

Its got your name on it...I thought it was yours!

We had a parade of cars like this go by the house a couple weeks ago. My comment to my wife is how we should be ashamed at what we call cars nowadays.

My dentures just about fell into my coffee cup!!

I SOLD this dog! $12.00 as a "Buy it Now"! It was the one that gave me the most distress! I was gonna consider myself lucky, if I could get $8.00 for it!

AND!

I did it honestly! But not without taking a shot at the apple-hole that sent it to me! DARE to have a little integrity. It's a risk well worth it! You can look at yourself in the mirror in the morning!

I wrote to the buyer asking what else he collects. "Mercs", he replies with a list of empty slots. (He's getting a surprise 1916-S Mercury Dime in his package!)

Now, has anyone seen my car keys? I gotta move my Hudson, or they'll tow it. Today's street cleaning on our side.

What? You wanna see the 1853 that I'm going through all these hoops to keep?

Sorry! Only one coin per post. The lot of 4 was $46.00 plus shipping and tax. About $54.00 out the door. That's $13.50 per coin, with my '53 a nice solid XF. I'll live! Already at grey sheet with two left to sell.

My sinister side wants to send the seller back an empty envelope that he eBay charged him return shipping for!
But, naw! Refund request will be withdrawn.

Wow - congrats on the good sale and also in giving the guy his 16-S!

I just hope that people back in the 50s really appreciated what they had as far as quality and class in their vehicles. But, then again, how could they since they were the ones who started to buy the newer models that evolved into todays (mostly) gray pregnant roller skates?
