1988-d copper dime

#1 Unread post by dww »

Hello. I am a new member and have a question. I found a weakly struck 1988-d copper dime in pocket change many years ago. It is missing the nickel layers on both the obverse and reverse side. The dime weighs 0.5 grams and measures .636" in diameter. Would this be considered an authentic missing clad layer coin? Thanks for your consideration.

No, sorry, this coin has been mechanically and chemically altered by acid so this is a damaged coin.

This coin was put into nitric acid and left to sit for a short time. I made a lot of these over the years in class so my students would have a good visual to remember Nitric acid is used for dissolving metals. A pretty violent reaction giving off copious amounts of brown gas and turning the liquid from clear to green.

I did many over the years of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
