1882 cc Morgan Reverse - rotation question

#1 Unread post by Soaru678 »

I have a GSA holdered 1882 cc Morgan. I am preparing to send it in for grading with NGC. I was comparing it to another 1884 cc morgan and noticed the reverse of the 1882 is rotated about 10° to 15° clockwise from the 1884 cc. Is this a known normal 1882 cc coin? I made an attempt to overlay both images. Not the best photo but here it s anyway.
1882 and 1884 Morgans cc overlay.jpg
The bolder image is the 1882.

Can you include the Obverse? A Mirror Photo would work best with this question

OK "mirror" did not work since this is in a GSA holder. Here are two images Obverse and Reverse Using the base of the holder for horizontal reference.

It's indeed a Rotated Die Error

http://www.error-ref.com/rotated_die_error/

NGC will recognize these errors if it rotated die error is 15° or more

https://www.ngccoin.uk/news/article/776 ... rs-part-1/

And the holder is also a good base to show the rotation misalignment on the photos

Thank You for verifying this. This coin came from my Dad's collection. He only bought one of the GSA CC coins. Maybe a lucky one at that.

Setting aside the superficial contact markings on the obverse, it's a really nice looking CC Morgan! I've got a few of these GSA CC coins from my Dad's collection - you've piqued my curiosity to go check them out!

Update on This GSA Morgan. I submitted this coin to NGC with Variety and Rotated Die information. It came back 1882 CC HITLIST-40 $1 VAM-2C2 GSA HOARD Mint error MS64.
