Should I have my 1892 s barber half graded???

#1 Unread post by Michael a »

I went metal detecting today in a modern Park from the 1990s and come upon an 1892 s barber half. It was unbelievable I haven't even found a silver quarter yet and I find this. It has not been cleaned to my knowledge I got a q-tip wet and rolled it across the coin that's it just to clean the dirt off is this coin worth sending off to PCGS it looks like a fine grade and what could be the value of this coin really $300 to $600

First of all, Concrat's , Nice find !!
I found a 1892S Quarter one year . It came back Environmental Damage . So, I would't do it unless you just want it encapsulated .

Welcome

It may be in your best interest, to search out, on this site,....... several posts describing the submission of coins to the TPG's.

Nice find!

A close inspection of your images posted here....... show obvious hairlines, pitting, and some distracting prime focal hits.

Zooming on the REV pic I see areas, especially under the eagles' legs that look like this coin was scrubbed/wiped/cleaned/brushed/etc. at some time.

Lines across the bust, in the neck area especially, also are present.

If what the pics show are there, I would say this one would come back a details coin.

Nice find!

You mean you can't see the lines where this coin has been cleaned?

It's a nice find but it is a details coin because it's been cleaned.

Thanks.

The coin could have been cleaned a long time ago but it has lines from being cleaned is all I am saying.

Hi Michael - I'm also relatively new to this site, and you've certainly come to the right place. Listen to these guys and watch Daniel's videos. Your eyes will be opened and you'll see things you would have never noticed before (this has been my experience).

For a "found-in-the-dirt" coin, that's a great find. Do you happen to have any pictures from when you first found it? A soft rolling of a wet Q-tip probably wouldn't have produced the lines they're referring to, so it was likely cleaned before you found it? Which means what? That some coin collector was foolishly carrying this around in a park in the 1990s? OMG!

Anyway - welcome, and congrats on a great find!

When I first found the coin I didn't know what I had and I wiped some dirt off to see what it was either that I did not clean the coin
Unfortunately I have seen a lot of youtube vids where people do this very thing. Whether or not it was you who scratched it or not is impossible to tell, but from now on...please never wipe them when you find them. If the scratches were from you, you unknowingly took off a lot of value.

Cleaning is a generic term used for coins where people have removed dirt by wiping/rubbing etc. all the way to scrubbing vigorously with metal polish. All of this reduces coin value greatly.

Coins can be "conserved" which is removing a foreign substance without any effect on the original surface metal at all. This, when done properly, will not "clean" the coin and the coin retains its value.

I see some detectorists use squirt bottles they carry with them to initially clear off the grime without wiping. Just realize the smallest amount of removing of surface metal (wiping, rubbing, etc.) will lower the value. If you have to leave them dirty until you get home to properly take care of them...then do...its in your best interest.

There are ways to remove the dirt without physically harming the coin, but that's for another thread! If you need help sometime, just ask :)
