1824 - 1949 Swiss Federal Shooting Festival Gold Medal

#1 Unread post by Daniel »

The first festival was held at Aarau, Switzerland in 1824 and this gold medal was issued at the 1949 at the shooting festival held at Chur, Switzerland. They were issued in silver, bronze, white metal and aluminum with low mintages from 700-900 with many being melted down for bullion.

The actual gold melt, based on current gold spot, is a tad over a $1,000 USD and value is $1,300 plus.

Material: Gold, Weight: 26.89 g, Fineness: .900 ( 24.20 g fine) Diameter: 33.00 mm

Inscription: EIDGENOSSICHES SHUTZENFEST CHUR 1949 which loosely translates to Swiss Federal Shooting Festival Chur (Swiss City Name).

Most are reportedly melted down so if they minted 900 of these then there's much less remaining. I could only find two sources online where the gold has sold, so who knows how rare this one actually is.

Hi! I'm new to this forum. I have an 1895 Zurich Martin 1046 in gold (Richter 1756a). Does anyone know if the purity of gold for this medal is the same as the Chur piece (.900)? Mintage is listed as 44.

To see the NGC picture of the piece go the the Verify NGC Certification enter the number: 3593699-001

PCGS has graded one of the 44, SPECIMEN 67. I haven't yet compared my piece to their pic for die characteristics but plan to do so.

Any thoughts on Speciman/Proof examples of Swiss Shooting talers or medals?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.

Does "modern" gold mean those medals struck prior to 1900?

Thanks!

Hi guys, I want to share my purchase of Vladimir Lenin Gold medal, 900 gold, 17 grams. What do you think about my purchase? I get a loan from https://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/
My grandma was born in Russia, and this was a gift to show my immense love for her. Lenin was a controversial figure during that time, but older people like my grandma and grandpa admired him. It was pretty hard to find this medal, but I think I did a great job. Thanks to guys from New Bond Street, my grandma's dream is accomplished. Now she is wearing his Lenin next to her heart.

This town is located in the Canton of Aargau. Here is a beauty from there of a different era.
