Should I mention previous offers to a dealer if I have proof?

#1 Unread post by Gam3rBlake »

Hey everyone,

Last month I bought an Athenian owl Tetradrachm in MS condition from Heritage Auctions for $1,500.

A few days ago I got an offer from HA for $2,363 (minus 10% commission) for the same coin.

If I take this coin to a dealer should I bring the email showing the offer I got as a way to negotiate on a fair price with them?

Or should I just go in and ask what his offer is without mentioning other offers?

Thanks!

(Here is the offer in case anyone is curious)
Note: I also got an offer of $2,250 which I rejected as shown at the bottom of the email.

Wow! I wish I would get those kind of offers from Heritage. Showing the local dealer the offer, might save you lots of time.

I agree with the Cap'n. It can't hurt to show it to the dealer. Nice buy!

It’s not something that happens regularly xD.

I just don’t want to pay a 10% commission if I sell it so I was hoping maybe a dealer would be a better option if I decide to sell it.

But I went to a dealer once and he offered me $900 for it even though these offers prove it can bring it more than double that.

Don’t get me wrong I have no problem with a dealer making a profit. Dealers should make a profit since they’re using their capital and taking a risk. I just don’t think the profit margins should be over 100%.

So I was just curious if maybe bringing in this email for the dealer to see would help prove to him that the market is offering higher prices than the $1200 the dealer told me he could sell it for.

Thanks for your thoughts :).

I’m not planning on selling it at the moment but if I ever do I will show the dealers the offers so they can see that it’s definitely worth more than $900. Even including a very nice profit margin for the dealer.

I would take the offer, and sell it to them, since a dealer can only see you got an offer and has no guarantee the dealer can sell it for the same.
I am a dealer and until I can see sold price points at $1,500 then the offer would not mean much to me.

Thanks Daniel :) I appreciate your advice as a dealer.

I guess I will do that in the event I ever sell.
