1843 Seated Dollar - Old PCI holder
Hello everyone, I have an 1843 Seated Dollar in an Old PCI holder graded EF 40 at the time. What are your thoughts on it? Do you think it is still a fair grade for today (Extra Fine 40) or do you think it should be resubmitted for a higher grade? Do you think it looks cleaned? Your thoughts see below for pictures. I think it looks between AU50-AU53, personally.

It's not a higher grade and can't see the coin well enough to tell if it's cleaned or not.

I could see that. Looking for defects, The reverse looks AU except for the ding/scratch/or grim near the left of the eagle's wing. The obverse has a few scratches and I guess doesn't look AU in hindsight. So I could see it going XF45, myself. I've just compared it to AU50 and AU53 examples and it certainly shines a light to them except for those defects that probably give this coin a lower grade. Still I'm glad I bought it. I just hope if I get it regraded it doesn't come back as cleaned then it would lose some value.

Re: 1843 Seated Dollar - Old PCI holder
My initial thoughts using the second pics would be AU...
1. Except that damage on the REV is very pronounced. It IS damage correct, and not staining? I really like the looks of the REV - nice and sharp.
2. The wear on the OBV on all the high points just looks too severe to me to make it over XF.
Now if the coffee in the grading company is good on the day the graders see it, the graders are in a good mindset, and the Grand Celestial Frog of Ganymede ribits on your birthday...then the label might say AU.
But I really don't see it getting AU.
I also would be hoping to be proven wrong if you would take the gamble and send it in.

Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):

The reverse on seated coins always looks a bit higher than the obverse because the obverse design is a little higher in relief thus wears first. So the coin is EF.

1. It appears pronounced and perhaps those are scratches (I'm not sure I bought this from a website). However, if they are scratches but rather straining or toning then it might help with the grade. I like the looks of it too.
2. I agree in hindsight there are a lot of scratches on the obverse and it doesn't entirely look AU but blazes I'll take XF40 or XF45 if it makes it. I like the transpose of lady liberty on the obverse but you're right the surfaces are a bit worn and might not allow the coin to grade higher.
Overall, whether it grades the same or higher I'm still happy with my purchase as it looks attractive to me. I'm still going to eventually get it graded and see what i get. I just hope it doesn't come back as XF cleaned/details or AU cleaned/details then I'd be upset. I'd just rather have an NGC or PCGS graded coin over a PCI coin (are they even in business anymore?). I have a couple ANACS graded coins I'm happy with.
