Penny 1943 plated
hello Daniel and friends of the forum.
What do you think is the problem with this Lincoln cent? The reverse looks normal but on the obverse you can see a cover plate that has partially detached or the plating is not done well, visible around "leberty" and Lincoln's shoulder and face. I took photos with my phone I hope they are enough if you need more photos, ask me. Thanks to those who want to answer.
Greetings from Rome

Re: Penny 1943 plated
It's a Steel Cent made during the WW2 era . It's very corrosive at that .

Re: Penny 1943 plated
yes, steel penny. but being plated and the plate on the obverse is absent in many large areas and therefore has gaps that show a different metal underneath. is all this normal?

Re: Penny 1943 plated
Using your picture for attribution here,....... this coin appears to have had the obverse "Resurfaced" with something (?), In an attempt to hide the existing post mint surface damage.....JMO

Re: Penny 1943 plated
I don't think anyone has an interest in manipulating a very ordinary dime. I think more of a plating error of the round plate that shows parts of the paint on the obverse that have come off. to me it seems like a mistake made in the mint during the plating phase

I think you might have confused something. The question and photo are about a 1943 steel cent. Don't know where the dime come in?

Re: Penny 1943 plated
You're wrong. I have many common coins that people manipulated and damaged and plated. Just watch my videos, I show you several of them. Also we're not here to argue, we know the facts and have told you the 100% truth about your coin. Scott was a troll that got mad and made a bunch of bad comments.italycoins wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 9:51 am I don't think anyone has an interest in manipulating a very ordinary dime. Re: Penny 1943 plated
Maybe this will help.
Back in '43 the mint made zinc plated steel cents.
As time went on many, many of the steel cents would tarnish and turn an ugly dark grayish color from circulation.
After awhile many people and companies, for various reasons, would put yet another plating onto the coins to make them shiny again.
As one example, here is a picture of a set identical to one I got when younger and I opened a bank account at a local bank. All of the coins had been either plated or highly polished to make them shiny. In my set the half, quarter, and dime had been polished harshly to make them shiny. The 1943 nickel and steel cent had been re-plated to make them shiny.
People did this to the 1943 cents for jewelry making. making novelty items, and for making the cents look new and selling them, to people who didn't know any better, as "rare steel war pennies."
It appears your cent has had the extra, non-mint re-plating coming off in areas. This happens when the re-plating was done without properly preparing the coins first by making sure all surface impurities were removed before applying the new plating.

Re: Penny 1943 plated
Yes. It looks like this is a zinc plate I think above the obverse. The reverse, on the other hand, does not have this plating. Probably this zinc plate on steel was not done properly and therefore over time has partially detached, leaving the obverse in a leopard spot
