Shattered Die?

#1 Unread post by Zayda »

I believe some pieces of the reverse shattered die were on the obverse during the striking process. I'm not really sure what to think about this penny. The more I look at it, the more I see things. It seems like a lot is going on here or maybe it's just me. I figured I pointed out enough and I should just have professionals take a look lol. So I would like to know if I have been wasting my time on this one or is it worth something. I'm attaching reverse and obverse, both with and without arrows and text so it can be seen as best as possible. Thanks so much in advance!

The reverse is completely fine, it just has some dings. The obverse may have something going on but it's definitely not a shattered die. It looks completely different. Looks like a normal wheat cent to me!

OK, ty. I've studied so much on it. I thought at least, there was foreign debris on the obverse during the strike. Thank you so much for your reply!

Save Yourself time, effort, and disappointment...don’t learn the coin hobby backwards. 😊

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage.

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.😊

Thank you. I only knew about coppercoins.com and recently error-ref.com. I think it's crazy that I could see a different image or just something different every time I look at it or rotate it. I am taking the advice given and I'm going to spend much less time on each coin. Thank you so much for your time and advice!
