1979-P Susan B. Anthony "Wide Rim" Dollar
Greetings, folks, hope your Thanksgiving was full of food and not as politically jaded as mine... LOL
I discovered one of my five 1979 Susan Dollars happens to be the "wide rim" variety! Or at least I am about 95% sure it is after watching Daniel's videos and checking for myself on PCGS. I didn't plan on posting this (I thought this was common and not worth mentioning), but JTCC requested I do so. I tried to get good pictures of both sides. I can always try to get better photos if requested, but even with an iPhone 10 getting solid pics is tough.
I am sure it is at least lightly circulated; there is some good detail on it, but areas like the hair appear slightly worn. My best guess is it would be graded around XF40 but y'all can take a stab at it if you'd like. I have no plans to send this in for grading; too expensive and I don't find slabs cool enough to blow that kind of money. Images below; feedback welcome!

Congratulations! It is a wide rim variety! It’s not in horrible condition but certainly not good enough for sending out. I did notice a fingerprint on the reverse of the coin, so give it a lil’ dip in acetone and in a 2x2 it go. Check Ebay sold listings for current prices, it’s very possible that you just made a couple bucks finding this coin here.

Yeah I started noticing little bits of damage as I took the photos of it. Glad to have something interesting out of these dollar coins, at least. I wasn't too impressed when I found more than one at first. I had heard of them and that tons were minted, so I assumed finding one was finding any old face value coin. Hearing they got the nickname "Carter Coins" was pretty funny.JTCC wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 12:46 am Congratulations! It is a wide rim variety! I also just found two Littleton envelopes, each supposedly containing a 1979 "All Mint Set." All three coins are in the same pouch. I noticed the 1979-S looks silverer than the 1979-P and 1979-D coins? Not sure how normal that is. Sadly, neither of the 1979-P are wide rimmed. Both sets are still in their Littleton packaging. I've thought about posting them in a new topic under General US Coins just to show I have them and give people the opportunity to discuss the set.
I assume they wouldn't be worth the hassle trying to sell? Sure, PCGS shows a 1979 set going for about $71 if you can sell at MS65 (the reverses look good but the obverses don't look super detailed, so MS65 may be generous). However, actually getting that money would require them be graded and imply a best-case scenario.
Re: 1979-P Susan B. Anthony "Wide Rim" Dollar
So, I guess the take-a-way here would be to find one in a mint set. That would be nice! I wonder if any have been found in mint sets?

It looks like the complete mint set including a wide rim Susan in MS67 could go for about $12,000 based on PCGS. The wide rim alone would be upwards of $1,900 in MS67 state, far better if MS67+. The most valuable coin in the series though would be the mint-state 1981-S; that sucker is $6K on its own in MS67!

You should check the 1979 mint set listings on eBay and try to cherrypick one.

Re: 1979-P Susan B. Anthony "Wide Rim" Dollar
I remember those days well. The following are just facts from having lived through it with no intent on making a discussion about the issues, so please do not.Hearing they got the nickname "Carter Coins" was pretty funny.
1. They were generally seen in the day as an active political statement from the left promoting the Woman's LIb movement.
2. No one wanted to carry pocket weights around instead of the convenience of lightweight bills.
People have favored the convenience of bills in America since the time a single .50 coin was no linger enough to get you through a business day (buying lunch etc.). By the time of the Carter Quarters, a person could get stuck with a large number of them by the end of the week and carrying them around was not preferred.
3. When the coins entered the public, I remember no excitement (except in the media). People jammed so many vending machines (etc.) with the coins b/c people just assumed what they felt in their pocket was a quarter. So it took little time before most people hated them.
These ill-conceived coins were eventually relegated to become Baltimore City subway tokens (look it up!).

I didn't even know Baltimore had an underground subway system.

If I ever have a thousand bucks to blow haphazardly on a box like that, A) wow I can't wait to have that much free money and B) you assume it wouldn't be going to firework cases instead?
I never even knew you could buy a box of dollar coins like that. I hardly realized the coins themselves were around still until I was given a circulated one for Christmas around 2010. I think I still have it somewhere.

LOL good luck with that one. That's not my fault! Just find a 1955 doubled die wheat cent or a 1965 MS-68 Roosevelt dime to pay it offCoin Mule wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 9:12 pm
