Shilling-1816 with a mint error?!

#1 Unread post by Vanadis »

Hello,
I have a question about an interesting coin. I'm getting an offer from a coin dealer about 1 shilling 1816 and I really like the coin, but I see some potential problems on the reverse. The attached pics are of the coin. I try to compare the coin with the MS66 coins here: https://www.pcgs.com/valueview/george-i ... 5145&h=pop

As you see some details on the reverse are missing or... kinda strange (see the upper crown and its pearls, also the lines behind the lions and the lyre). So how do you think, is this mint error of some kind or the coin is actually poor? How would you grade it? Does it stand a chance for MS64?

Thanks you in advance!

I saw this but have not answered b/c I am not certain. My GUESS (note that word) is a blocked die strike (grease/polish filled).

Since below the top of the crown area its only the background and small lines that are missing while the high points remain crisp, this may be the case.

Hoping Paul or Daniel chime in here.

Thank you for the option. It sounds reasonable. Maybe it is a blocked die.

Loss of detail is most likely due to die deterioration/minor plugging.....
This is why it's important to learn the coins "Composition & Die State"
