1978-P Lincoln Cent w/ Alloy Mixing Error?

#1 Unread post by CoinPyro »

Evening to you all,

I was zoning out while sifting through some pennies this evening until I came across this. After some searching on Error-Ref, the closest match I can find is a planchet error in the form of an Alloy Mixing Error (Their page on this error can be found here: https://www.error-ref.com/improper-alloy-mix/ for your convenience). It looks like a barcode faded onto the reverse of this penny. These lines are so well aligned with eachother that I thought it may be just that, at first! I don't see this being PMD though after looking at some examples for alloy errors.

It's not worth much of anything I imagine, but as usual that isn't my objective anyway. This is definitely my first time ever seeing a coin that looks like this. Images below, with any and all feedback being welcome as always. Hopefully I'll find something more blatant and exciting soon so you guys don't have to keep squinting to see what I'm talking about... LOL

It’s what we usually call a “woodie” due to wood grain like toning. note: this is misinformation! "woodie" applies to actual alloy mixing errors and not roller marks! this coin has roller marks, not a genunine alloy mixing error.

This happens sometimes but as far as I know it's just toning and doesn't add value.

"Hey C, the latest thinking is that there was a problem with the copper alloy to start with. then due to exposure to the general environment, the "woodgrain" like appearance became more prominent, I have seen some that look like the colors have been painted on, really nice. From what I know, it really does not add to the value of the coin, I don't know why, maybe there are so many. I know there is no "official" designation. It's funny, toned silver coins, like Morgans sell at a premium, but these don't, go figure. Oh and to whom it may concern, I am not getting into a debate of environmental damage vs toning, I am interested in practical stuff, not philosophical differences."

WRONG and I admit it

ND Tyson PHD "My concern here is that the philosophers believe they are actually asking deep questions about nature. And to the scientist it's, "What are you doing? Why are you concerning yourself with the meaning of meaning?"

Richard Feynman “Philosophy of science is about as useful to scientists as ornithology is to birds.”

Roller marks - too parallel and perfect to be a Woodie. As Daniel has said, please look up (both) at error-ref.com

After viewing a couple examples, I agree it's roller marks. I found a post from this forum, coincidentally, which breaks down some similar terms and that helped me understand. This is a pretty vivid example of them compared to the one shown in that topic, though. I thought it was an alloy error basically for the reasons it's NOT an alloy error. 😂

I swear it always seems to be a term I scrolled past on Error-Ref because it was named weird or didn't have a dedicated article attached. The vocabulary in this hobby is a struggle! 😵

This penny was inside a satchel with other loose pocket change (mostly pennies and nickels). It was left in a random place and forgotten about; the newest coin I've seen so far was from 1998.

A couple other folks in here don't think it is a "woody" because of how consistent and 'perfect' the lines are. They suggested roller marks; after reading on them some at Error-Ref I agree more on this theory. I do agree though it's weird, if not suspicious, that the markings are only on one side. If the coin could talk, maybe it would give us the answer. Since it can't, though, we have to guess. 😂

Yes, I totally agree roller marks, using the images posted.... I just love to see others immediately reply with a guess!

Also keep in mind that coins like this may have been stored in a Whitman Album.
I have found several of these with similar type striated toning.
