#1 Unread post by Phillipf317 »

I have this 2001 New York quarter minted in Philadelphia with a P mint mark and it’s Silver. It weights 5.8grams. So my question is, is it a mint error?? Thanks in advance

It’s not a silver quarter, modern silver proof quarters are all struck at San Francisco mint and bare an S mint mark. This quarter is likely plated if you are wondering why there’s no copper showing on the edge.

My metal detector indicates that it was silver. Im not sure that if it was plated it would show that it’s silver. Thanks for the response

Aren't the ASE's the only silver coins struck at the Philly Mint?

A silver quarter weighs 6.25 grams and just a simple search for the weight would have solved your question.

Since no silver quarters are struck at the Philly mint, it would be impossible for the accidental production of a P quarter onto a silver quarter planchet.

MANY modern quarters are plated silver/gold/platinum and sold in gimmicky sets with hype to make people empty their wallets on non-collectables.

The plating is most likely why your metal detector says its silver. And, as Daniels has already pointed out, the weight is all wrong.

That's kinda why ask my question…
The fact that a "Silver Quarter Planchet" would not even be in the building.
