Can someone tell me how to tell that what I see is not doubling of E pluribus unum?

A quick search in Variety Vista turned up fruitless. This coin likely has a non-collectible type of doubling as it was not listed in VV.

Yes - go to error-ref.com and search for "doubling." Go down through the list and find out what actual doubling is as well as the many examples they have of non-collectable doubling. You should be able to match the type you see with the pictures there.

This is always the best way to identify doubling that is collectable or not.
