Found a Jefferson Nickel I’m needing some help identifying

#1 Unread post by HallMarkedStack »

Hello everyone, I was hoping to see if anyone could help me with this possible error.

I went to a coin collectors estate sale where I purchased a box of coins. Inside this box I found a nickel that I’m pretty positive is a mint error. I’ve seen many times graded nickels that look like this one where PCGS / NGC recognized it as a mint error.

Let me know what you think

Just a very, very, worn Jefferson nickel. Not a mint error in any way, possible “dryer coin”.

It looks so much like a coin that comes off an over oiled die that it’s hard for me to just toss it aside and say it came out of a dryer.

What exactly make you think this coin is an error especially since you cannot find it listed on any site?
Are sure they are exactly like the one you posted?

A grease filled die never looks like this, another giveaway is the thickness of the coin, which is way finner than it should be, indicating a altered coin.

Looks like it was hit with a bead blaster. I took a small engine repair class as a high schooler and we ran a few coins into it just to see what would happen and looked very similar to this.

What do you think about the option of it being acid treated?

Could you post an image or a link where PCGS and NGC graded a coin that looks like this as a mint error? Thanks

Sorry, this is obviously nothing like a dryer coin. No raised rim and smooth OBV and REV. Please search dryer coin at error-ref.com. Take the thread there for the Dryer coins 101 thread.

Nope. A soak in acid will eave the surface mottled/pitted and not smooth. In my chemistry classes I used to deliberately put coins into nitric acid so my students got a good visual on remembering nirtic acid was used to dissolve metals.
