Am I correct? This is not a mint error

I believe this is not a mint error because the one is missing a piece.

This is just post int damage.

It is always best to assume what you find is not an error - which will be the case with most coins you find. Try to look at the coin logically and ask yourself if dropping, hitting, something small impating it, something grinding the surface, etc. could have been happened.

You are trying to hard to find coin errors without knowing what an actual error is! The current path you are on is going to waste your time and you will be disappointed you are finding nothing worth collecting over and over again.

Save Yourself time, effort, and disappointment...don’t learn the coin hobby backwards. 😊

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage.

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.😊

I have visited variety vista at length. Most of the errors I can’t even see. Especially the dd’s

I know exactly what you mean! I started out that way as well😊

Tell you what...
You gave me an idea for what I think could be a useful educational tool!

Copy some of the picture in question from VV (PLEASE include the original link to give them credit)* and post them in a thread asking something like, "how is this a doubled die?" I will be happy to annotate the pictures for you to show you/members what to look for in the pictures😊

In fact, that might just grow into a good theme for a sticky post for the forum.😺

The problem is that so many doubled dies have such minor doubling that its hard to see. Most collectors don't pay much attention to the minor ones anyway and certainly don't pay large sums of money for them.

*you can do this easily by looking for a browser extension called "TinyURL Maker." On any site you can click on the icon the extension will show in your browser window. When you do, the extension automatically makes a short URL link and automatically copies it to your clipboard. So all you have to do in your post, after hitting that extension, is click in the text you are writing to the forum and paste it there.
