1996 D Lincoln Cent Wide AM - DID I FIND ONE???

#1 Unread post by sejory318 »

Hello Everyone,

Can someone please review the pictures I am posting and tell me whether or not I have found a 1996 wide AM Lincoln Cent? In the pictures, I have the coin in question sitting on the left, and another 1996 penny on the right for comparison.

The coin in question is pretty beat up. My hope, providing I receive positive feedback from this community, is that I can get the coin graded by PCGS or NGC as "Damaged," but with the attribution of a "1996 Wide AM.". As far as I can tell, the coin has the right date (1996), the correct FG (with the serif, although it is really hard to see) and without question the A and the M are not touching each other.

I look forward to your feedback.

Thanks to one and all,

S. Edward Jory

Hello and Welcome, Your coin has "Zinc Rot". It's hard to see anything. It's worthless at this point. JMO.

Hi and thank you for your response. Can anything be done to stop and/or ameliorate zinc rot? Also, I don't know whether or not you have tried tapping/clicking on the pictures I posted, but when I tap on the pictures on my smartphone I am able to zoom into and enlarge the picture(s), and reveal much more detail in the coin. And if this is an actual 1996 wide AM, and can be authenticated as such, it might not be worth much money, because of the damage, but wouldn't it still be valuable as positive proof that the 1996 wide AM actually exists?

It is not a Wide AM. You can see that the FG is away from the base of the Memorial thus they are both Close AM (normal for the year. Spend them as they are both only worth 1C

Hi, I m not sure what PMD means but as I stated in the message/description of my post, the penny on the left (looking at the pictures in landscape profile) is the penny I believe to be the 1996 wide AM. The penny on the right I simply put there for comparison. I also stated that the penny which I believe to be the wide AM was pretty beat up. So perhaps this clarifies which penny I would like the community members to scrutinize. And for those members who prefer to look at their pennies upsidedown, it would be the penny on the right that I would like you to consider. Thank you for your response.

Hi DSCoins,

Regarding the FG being away from the base of the memorial - I just watched Danial Malone's YouTube video concerning the 1996 wide AM and in his video the FG of the wide AM reverse is "away" from the memorial. But not as far away as the close AM reverse. The deciding factor for the FG seems to be whether or not it has the serif on the G. And again, to my eye it appears that on the penny in question not only is the FG closer to the memorial (although still "away" from it), it also has the serif. Thanks again for your response.

PMD is short for Post Mint Damage.

Even if it's the 1996 Wide AM, it has a considerable amount of Zinc Rot.

You can use the coin to help maybe find another one, but this one is sadly worthless.

Don't even bother looking at roached out coins, there's no value there and you will be wasting your time

Seeing this is about a 1996 Wide AM, I am very curious as to where the 1996 WAM is listed. I know there is 1996 DDO. I know there is a 1988 Wide AM determined by the font of the FG. Then you have the 1998, 1999, and 2000 WAM.

Re: 1996 D Lincoln Cent Wide AM - DID I FIND ONE???

#15 Unread post by sejory318 »

Hi DSCoins, please watch Daniel Malone's YouTube video regarding the 1996 wide AM. He begins the video by asking, "...does the 1996 wide AM even exist?". And then goes on to explain how in 2009 a certain man, Billy Crowford, who is very respected in the numismatic community claimed to have found one, and even presented a picture of the coin, obverse and reverse. But he then claimed that the coin had been stolen.

Other than that situation, a 1996 wide AM has never been found, graded, or authenticated.

That is why I was (and still am) so excited as to whether or not the coin I found is actually a 1996 wide AM. Regardless of whether or not it has any monitary value due to it's zinc rot damage, if the coin could be authenticated as a 1996 wide AM, it would "solve the mystery" as to if one exists. And it would further bolster Billy Crowford's reputation, and his ascertion that his 1996 wide AM had actually been stolen.

Hope this helps. Thanks for the reply.

Crawford is an expert on this, maybe contact him or use the contact form at error-ref.com and ask there. We can't confirm anything here.

Hi Daniel, thank you for pointing me in a direction... And thank you for all the time and effort you put into your YouTube channels and helping out the coin collecting community. I've learned a lot from your videos (even though I ignored your advice about finding a "problem free" 1996 wide AM cadidate 🙃).
