Peace Dollar - What is this green film?

#1 Unread post by Apostle12 »

Purchased some coins recently & think the guy had collected errored coins.

What is this greenish film layer over the coin? Even though there is a consistent 1mm that is clear around the bust, there's no break in the coating until near the top where you can clearly see that it's missing.

3-4 possiblities come to mind. Mint error with plastic? Intentional specialty design in 1926 where some has peeled away? Chinese-made Counterfit coin? Somebody playing around with technology, such as a 3-D printer?

I went back and looked at your original post with all the coins......
This is definitely what I would call a "Post Mint Surface Contaminant",....... glue, nail polish, who knows?…

You should still post an image here for the others… hugeeyes

It had tape all over it at one time, not it only has a little (brown areas) where it use to be had a reaction and created PVC residue on the coin.

A soak in acetone may remove the foreign substance. No, acetone cannot hurt the coin in any way. No, acetone will not hurt you either :)
