1983 Lincoln memorial w/error?
I’ve been coin roll hunting for nearly a decade and I have not ever come to see this kind of error. I don’t even know what it would be called. A doubling mint Mark, yet no doubling of the mint Mark!? I’m confused.

Ouch! BB’s sure do hurt, however this seems a little too small to be a casualty of a bb. I truly do appreciate your opinion and expertise.

I learned long ago to not ask for a second opinion, I will appreciate your comments as to if anyone has come across a coin nearly with this same abnormality. Thank you.

Looks like a large and well placed but collapsed plating bubble. Cool find even though.

Ruptured gas bubble — Occurring when the roof of the gas pocket explodes through the metal, these errors may exhibit a crater-like pit on the coin. This is a possibly .

Re: 1983 Lincoln memorial w/error?
That sounds great. I would like to see another one just so that I know I’m not bragging that I have a unique coin. If you had to put an error name to it, what would it be? Thank you for your time and knowledge. Would it be in my best interest to send this coin in to be graded or verified that it is a genuine abnormality and not man made? Who would I send it to?

Re: 1983 Lincoln memorial w/error?
I agree with Daniel here....
This is the biggest blister I've seen.......
I'm not sure why everyone is in such a rush to send their coins off for "Grading" as it's being called ??
Plating issues are quite common, I don't believe this coin is worth the investment for encapsulation.

Re: 1983 Lincoln memorial w/error?
Thank you Paul. This is exactly what I needed to hear. As I said in my introduction I’m only looking for the copper coins. A majority of the time if an abnormality isn’t visible with the naked eye I am not looking further than what I’m interested in. However this coin reached out and touched me. Ew, how dirty money is. Thank you all for your feedback.

Re: 1983 Lincoln memorial w/error?
Update. I finally became a member to pcgs only because curiosity got to this cat...so i couldn't seem to get any answers so i decided to send them in to be graded and validated. Its been nearly two weeks since the submission and I await some(hopefully good) news. I will keep y'all posted. I will be attending the long beach coin show in September hopefully I will see and meet y'all. Until i get some news I will be informing you off the abnormalities of this kind. Thanks for your patience and expertise....

I gave you the answer and you just wasted your money on this coin. The coin was not worth sending off for grading.

Re: 1983 Lincoln memorial w/error?
Unfortunately the public has a mindset that coin grading companies are THE experts with anything having to do with coins. The reality is...they just grade coins: They examine a coin and assign what they think it looks like depending on how much wear there is. Oh...and they have some really helpful online reference materials.Would it be in my best interest to send this coin in to be graded or verified that it is a genuine abnormality and not man made? Who would I send it to?
There area a lot of people who waste their money (the companies do not mind ) by failing to understand there is no place to "send in coins" to find out what official "error" (or not) the coin is.
As has been said, it will come back as damaged or in a "body bag."
In fact if a person HAS a legit error and wants to get it slabbed, the submitter is required to request the error/variety be listed as such on the slab/label. And..of course...pay an extra fee for the tiny bit of extra ink on the label.
Even at that, if you follow the link in my signature and read the paper there, you will proof (all linked for verification) of way too many examples showing how the companies have a lousy track record for properly telling if a coin IS that specific variety or not.
We all live and learn.
And...BTW...as has been said...it is a cool looking anomaly!
Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):

Sorry but once again I'm having trouble with uploading a picture. However if you go onto the pcgs cert verification and type in this cert#42473943 you will get what info I was given. Thanks for your patience.

Paul, This is really strange. The mint mark looks almost untouched. Were these mint marks possibly punched seperately? Could a punch leave something like this?

This is an interesting one. Of course I would need to see it firsthand to give you a 100% here.
Keep in mind that the mint marks were hand punched…
But I don't believe the Mintmark Punch here would have left the big circular indentation that you are seeing.
