Finally -- a 11886666 nickel

#1 Unread post by thairunts »

I've been in the market for one of these 1866 FS-302 Shield Nickels for some time now. Haven't been able to find one that I liked that I could afford.

Saw someone post this one on ebay for $299 and instantly bought it. For being marked "corroded and cleaned" I must say that I like the eye appeal. Certainly more than paying $2-3k for an AU50.

Not sure where the grading line is on "corroded." Thoughts? I wonder if I broke it out and sent to PCGS/NGC if it would just come back as cleaned (left obverse shows some marks)?

Thanks,
Scott

I am glad you got your coin but no one can honestly answer your question, but it didn't get EF because of the corrosion.

Agree with the XF details - was surprised by the label corrosion. I see corrosion all the time on 1885 nickels or 1790s large cents and this isn't the same. Never seen a guide from PCGS on what constitutes their line for calling something corroded.

Hope you don't mind but I made the picture easier to see. Cool variety!
And I agree with the opinions above.
