Triple or Possible Quadruple Die

#1 Unread post by jastruble1978 »

I recently discovered this coin that shows strong variety characteristics and I am not 100% sure to what degree it is. To me, it looks like triple, but to a certain degree it shows some signs of four different layers of the letter.

I’m pretty excited about this find. To my knowledge it is a discovery piece.

What Paul is saying is this is not a Doubled Die. When using a microscope to search coins you will be led astray. Research forms of Doubled Dies, here are a few sites you can study Error-ref, Doubled Die. You can also study what can and can not happen in the mint at Error-ref again. This is a good place to start. Until you fully understand all of what I mentioned you should stick to searching for known errors and varieties. A good place to start is PCGS

Along with the above
When posting photos of a coin you would like someone to look at, you should post a photo of both the full Obverse and Reverse. Try to take these photos as clear and close as possible. It would be extremely helpful if you would crop these photos. Next take some photos of the area in question again as close and clear as possible. It would also help if you could find some way to point to the area in question or give a detailed explanation of what you want to be looked at. If you need a photo editing program, there are three free ones that come to mind. They are PhotoScape, Inkscape and Gimp. Of the three PhotoScape is the easiest to use. Daniel explains quite well in the following topics, posting photos plus Daniels Video on posting coins

First off,
When posting photos of a coin you would like someone to look at, you should post a photo of both the full Obverse and Reverse. Daniel explains quite well in the following topics, posting photos plus Daniels Video on posting coins.
Posting even more photos will not change what is on the coin.
Machine Doubling as SensibleSal66 stated and I agree with, will still be machine doubling.

Your not inconveniencing any one. Just trying to point things out. As time goes by and the more you learn things will be different for you. You may also look back a some of your post and think, why did I call it that.
