1942 Nickel Missing Mint Mark or S Variety?

#1 Unread post by JRWSp00n »

Attached is a 1942 Nickel with a missing mint mark or a "S" variety. I couldn't find this variety in either Wexler's or briansvarietycoins guidebooks and I think I make out an "S" in the E PLURIBUS around the "U". Also looks like a mint error from Dome to E. P... Would appreciate feedback on coin grade, as well - I think this coin also looks to be EF-40 quality or lower and is it worth getting slabbed? Has anyone ran across this error or type of variety? Trying to decide if worth slabbing or sending to Wexler or just noting the variety - any feedback is appreciated. Cheers

What you're looking at is a standard Philadelphia mint 1942 nickel with surface damage

In 1942 you had two separate nickels. One was the standard nickel composed of 75% copper, 25% nickel and is considered the Type 1 and has no mint mark. Because nickel was need for the war the effort the mint change the alloy to 65% Copper, 35% silver and 9% Manganese (Type 2). A large P was placed on the reverse above Monticello to differentiate between the two alloys. You will not find a 1942 D silver war nickel as the Denver mint had all ready minted its quota. You will find that in 1942 you will have a 1942 no mint mark (Philadelphia), 1942 P (silver),1942 D, No 1942 D (silver) and a 1942 S sliver large S over Monticello.
