Faint or missing "4" on 1943 Steel Cent

#1 Unread post by seanc1123 »

I just bought an old NTC slabbed 1943 Steel Penny. When I was checking it out the 4 in the date was very faint, almost missing. Is this a mint error?

Please take a screen shot and post this instead of just taking a picture f your computer monitor. Pics of monitors end up having lines in them that blur the details and make it harder for us to see what is going on.

Much better👍🏻

Hard to tell exactly, but this is more than likely what is called a "greaser" or struck from a grease filled die. It will not add value since its not all that uncommon and can happen randomly on any part of the coin.

Die polishers will polish dies to prolong the die life. Sometimes too much polish is left inside elements of the die's design. So when the coin is struck, the metal cannot be pushed into that area of the die's design and the coin ends up looking like its missing something.

This is very common on steel cents. Struck through filled die.
